The Area Coordinator is responsible for developing and maintaining a respectful residential learning environment that promotes students' overall development and supports the academic mission of the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John's University (SJU). This position contributes to creating a sophisticated, inclusive, compelling, and collaborative work environment that honors and acknowledges the Catholic, Benedictine tradition. The Area Coordinator is also responsible for managing and overseeing various educational, administrative, and operational functions associated with managing residential communities.
Faculty Residents serve as pastoral mentors to students, fostering personal growth, spiritual reflection, and life skills development aligned with the SJU residential curriculum. Through teaching, mentorship, and community engagement, they help cultivate respectful, inclusive residential communities and support students in their academic and character development. Faculty Residents work closely with campus partners.

The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.
Area Coordinator (60%)
- Implement a residential curriculum in a cohort-based model.
- Collaborate with and guide residential committees to promote meaningful student engagement and involvement.
- Adjudicate conduct in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Students or designee. Administer the student conduct system for residents and serve as a residential system hearing officer with authority up to and including disciplinary probation.
- Provide crisis response/case management for student concerns. Coordinate on-site and front-line response to incidents, including those that are highly complex in nature (i.e. sexual misconduct, alcohol and drug related behavior, mental, health concerns, bias incidents, and community conflict).
- Serve as a member of the 24/7 on-call professional staff person for the on-campus residential system on a regularly scheduled rotation with other professional staff members to provide direct crisis response to incidents involving students.
- Present and assist with RA Training projects and/or tasks.
- Coordinate various seasonal operation logistics for new and returning students' move-in, move-out, and break periods.
- Create educational content and tools for engaging the SJU community on topics through the residential curriculum.
- Work collaboratively with staff from other University departments to provide learning, services, support, and programs for residents.
- Provide leadership for special projects assigned.
Faculty Resident (40%)
- Collaborate in the selection, mentoring, and supervision of Resident Assistants (RAs), instructing students about the goals and expectations of the residential curriculum and their responsibilities as community members.
- Connect with each resident student for ongoing mentorship and assessment of goals and progress on personal and academic development, as well as community engagement and responsibilities.
- Maintain a visible and active presence in the community in ways that invite and strengthen meaningful interaction—spending significant and meaningful time with residents of designated area(s), including providing community response to crisis and emergencies both locally and campus-wide.
- Teach residents healthy coping mechanisms, self-advocacy, and help-seeking strategies for managing stress and achieving goals.
- Promote community-building by leading and participating in activities and programs that support student development and learning outcomes.
- Teach skills for character development that are consistent with Benedictine values through their role in the adjudication of alleged violations of CSB and SJU policies.
- Inform students about and encourage the use of campus resources that support personal, academic, social, and spiritual growth.
- Work to create a healthy community environment, including maintaining appropriate quiet hours, cleanliness, and care of physical spaces.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, retreats, and workshops, and participate in campus events.
- Maintain designated office hours in a centralized location for student support and administration of co-curricular model.
- Develop and deliver educational plans that promote student learning and engagement.
- Plan and coordinate academic and supportive services and programs in collaboration with University partners, as applicable.
- Assist with student leadership development and the training of student leaders and Faculty Residents in alignment with the residential curriculum.
Other duties as assigned. Responsibilities begin Aug. 1 and conclude May 31.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree; master's degree in college student personnel, education, psychology, leadership, or a closely related field preferred.
- Two or more years of leadership experience in housing or student affairs in a college or university setting; supervision experience preferred.
- Knowledge or experience in men's development, leadership, and related issues.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering student belonging and inclusion.
- Proven ability to develop leadership in others, practice shared leadership, and collaborate effectively within a team to motivate and support collective goals.
- Demonstrated ability to manage administrative tasks with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, effective communication (oral and written), and positive interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant information platforms.
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Capability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to attend events, respond to student concerns, and participate in on-call duties when necessary.
- Maintain a lifestyle consistent with Catholic teaching and Benedictine values, while projecting a positive image of service aligned with the mission of the SJU Department of Residential Life and Housing.
- Must be able to live on campus in the assigned community. As the position is for a Faculty Resident in an all-male residence hall, it is a bona fide occupational requirement that the qualified candidate identifies as male.
Physical requirements:
- Requires working at a computer for extended periods, including typing, reading from a screen, and using various software programs essential for the role.
- Occasionally required to lift or move items up to 10-15 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical tasks for extended periods, including lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, and reaching, squatting, standing, etc. as required.
Travel requirements:
- Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.
