Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence
The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor to establish a national center of excellence for data science and artificial intelligence in Kinesiology. The School has established programs in Applied Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Movement Science, and Sport Management that will provide the academic homes for these faculty positions, ideally commencing in August 2026.
Candidates will be expected to (a) maintain a productive and nationally-recognized research program, (b) teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses and advise and mentor students across all academic levels, and (c) contribute service to the School, University, and field. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain extramural funding for an active research program at the University of Michigan.
We welcome applicants with a deep commitment to and focus on problems in the field of Kinesiology, whether they are (a) trained in data science or artificial intelligence and apply that expertise to understand and solve problems in Kinesiology or (b) trained in Kinesiology and have developed technical and scientific expertise in data science and artificial intelligence to advance their scholarship. We seek scholars who develop and use advanced technologies that leverage their expertise in data science or artificial intelligence to address problems in sport business, human health, sport science/performance, and physical activity. We are especially interested in applicants who can build on existing strengths and enable new capabilities for collaborations within the School of Kinesiology and across the University.
A doctoral degree in Kinesiology or a related field, including those directly involving data science or artificial intelligence (e.g., Information Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering). Candidates should demonstrate their contributions to a positive workplace culture aligned with our school's core values.
Assistant professor candidates should exhibit promise, trajectory, and/or achievements suitable for junior faculty at a major research university. At the assistant professor rank, candidates should have evidence of:
- scholarly prominence and academic independence, or high potential, with respect to publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research
- experience and/or willingness to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise;
- reasonable engagement in service (to the industry and/or the academy), and
- the ability to seek and secure external funding
At the associate and full professor ranks, candidates should exceed the expectations outlined at the assistant rank. In addition to those requirements, candidates should have:
- a consistent and ongoing record of securing research funding,
- demonstrated an elevated and consistent profile of scholarly and pedagogical excellence, and
- possess the necessary experience and skills to provide leadership that will advance the scholarly excellence in the School of Kinesiology.
