Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the ways in which curriculum is designed, delivered, and supported across all educational settings. Institutions must adapt to prepare students for an AI-driven future, while also equipping faculty with tools, strategies, and frameworks to responsibly and effectively integrate AI into their teaching and research practices.

The University of Utah, under its Strategy 2030 and One-U Responsible AI Initiative (One-U RAI), is investing in faculty who will strengthen teaching, research, and partnerships at the intersection of curriculum innovation, faculty support, and responsible AI use. This faculty member will build collaborations across colleges, develop research on AI in teaching and learning, and advance faculty development programs to expand AI literacy and innovative pedagogy across the institution.

We seek candidates with demonstrated expertise in research directed at curriculum innovation, AI in teaching and learning, and/or faculty development initiatives.

This recruitment specifically targets faculty with expertise in AI in curriculum and faculty support innovation, helping advance new pedagogical approaches and equipping educators with tools and knowledge to responsibly use AI in the classroom. Research areas may include, but are not limited to:

  • AI-supported curriculum design and instructional innovation
  • Faculty development and training in AI literacy and teaching practices
  • Ethical and responsible integration of AI in teaching and learning
  • AI-enhanced assessment, advising, and student engagement
  • Faculty-centered research on effective AI-supported teaching models
  • AI technologies design and development to enhance teaching and learning via learning engineering
  • Human-computer interaction and human-centered AI for teaching and learning
  • Cognitive, motivational, and social aspects of human learning and memory that inform the effective of use of AI in teaching and learning

This specific recruitment is for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will have a research appointment with the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah, and their tenure home in one of the following participating colleges and departments: College of Architecture + Planning: Department of City and Metropolitan Planning and Multi-Disciplinary Design, Division of Games, School of Architecture; College of Business: Departments of Operations & Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations (QAMO); College of Education: Department of Educational Psychology;College of Engineering: School ofComputing; College of Humanities: Departments of Communication and Writing & Rhetoric Studies; College of Science: Department of Mathematics; College of Social and Behavioral Science: Department of Psychology. We seek a colleague with a commitment to excellence in teaching and demonstrated ability to obtain research funding and publish high-quality peer-reviewed research. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our university's Strategy 2030 and theOne-U RAI.

Qualified candidates may come from education, instructional design, educational technology, learning sciences, social sciences, psychology, humanities, communication, writing studies, computer science, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, design, architecture, planning, business, economics, or related fields.

Responsibilities

Research & Scholarship:

  • Develop a program of applied research in AI for curriculum design and faculty support.
  • Publish high-quality peer-reviewed work and secure external funding in AI, pedagogy, or education research.
  • Explore responsible uses of AI in curriculum development, student engagement, and instructional innovation.

Teaching & Curriculum Development:

  • Teach and develop courses on AI in education, curriculum design, and faculty innovation strategies.
  • Contribute to certificate and professional development programs in AI and teaching innovation.
  • Mentor faculty, graduate students, and education leaders on responsible AI use in teaching.

Collaboration & Engagement:

  • Partner with the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute (sci.utah.edu) and other academic units to design scalable initiatives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments (Education, Business, Social Sciences, Humanities, Engineering, Sciences, Design, etc.).
  • Lead faculty development initiatives that expand institutional AI literacy and innovation capacity.

Leadership & Service:

  • Contribute to the University's national leadership in AI in teaching and learning.
  • Participate in faculty governance and committee work.
  • Advance inclusive practices to ensure all faculty and students have access to AI tools and training.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A doctoral degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, learning sciences, social sciences, psychology, humanities, communication, writing studies, computer science, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, design, architecture, planning, business, economics, or related fields (by start date).
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship or applied practice in AI and/or curriculum innovation.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence and faculty development experience.
  • Commitment to responsible, ethical, and equitable approaches to AI in teaching and learning.

Preferred:

  • Experience securing external funding from foundations, federal agencies, or industry.
  • Demonstrated partnerships with faculty development centers, professional organizations, or education initiatives.
  • Expertise in designing and evaluating accessible training programs for diverse faculty and instructors.
  • Experience with AI-enhanced teaching tools, learning analytics, or assessment frameworks.
