The Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), seeks an early (Assistant Professor) or mid-career (Associate Professor) Infectious Diseases Immunology researcher for a full-time, tenure-track position to lead and support the Department’s basic sciences, clinical and translational research in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and to support the immunology teaching/mentoring mission of the JABSOM. Other conditions: This is a legislatively budgeted temporary position with secured funding for 2 years. Continuation of this position beyond that date is dependent upon funding availability.
Assistant Professor – Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching: 20%
• Teach credit courses in relevant disciplines offered by the Department to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.
• Serve as a research mentor and advisor for undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, and medical residents.
Research: 60%
• Participate in and support existing infectious diseases research interests while establishing/re-establishing own basic science, clinical or translational research program at JABSOM.
o Relevant research interests in the Department include infectious disease pathogenesis, host-microbe interactions, infectious disease epidemiology and diagnostics, clinical trials, and vaccines and other novel engineering of prophylactic and therapeutic interventions against viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases such as HIV, SARS-CoV-2, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika, Filovirus, tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases, Leptospirosis, malaria, rat lungworm, and toxoplasmosis.
• Collaborate with principal investigators within and outside of the department engaged in various aspects of infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions research.
• Seek, secure and manage competitive extramural funding in various areas of tropical medicine research
• Present scholarly, peer-reviewed research nationally and internationally
Service: 20%
• Attends JABSOM faculty development sessions and department meetings
• Participate in the Department's committees for graduate admissions, assessment and curriculum development and evaluation.
• Participate in university-wide service.
Associate Professor – Duties and Responsibilities
Same as Assistant Professor with the additional responsibilities below:
• Secure, maintain and manage competitive extramural funding in the area of tropical medicine
• Mentor and advise other junior investigators in the department in preparing grant applications
• Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in the area of tropical medicine
• Participate in relevant national and/or international organizations and committees
Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.V.M. or other doctoral degree in the biosciences from a college or university of recognized standing. If M.D., must be board certified (within seven (7) years) or an active candidate for board certification and eligible for Hawaii medical license.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses,
- Good (or Excellent?) oral and written communication skills.
- Expertise in infectious diseases research with a strong research background as demonstrated by publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural research funding.
- Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications:
- At least three (3) years of postdoctoral research experience.
- Current recipient of a career development award/fellowship (e.g. National Institutes of Health (NIH) K series award) or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in obtaining independent extramural research funding.
- Experience in BSL-3 pathogens, animal models of BSL-3 pathogens, host-pathogen interactions.
- Experience in International research.
Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.V.M. or other doctoral degree in the biosciences from a college or university of recognized standing, with at least three (3) years of postdoctoral research experience.
- At least four (4) years of services as Assistant Professor or equivalent ranking.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level and service on graduate thesis/dissertation committees
- Expertise in infectious diseases research with a strong research background as demonstrated by publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated experiences in obtaining independent extramural research funding from federal, state or private sources.
- Demonstrated scholarly achievement in the field of specialty.
Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications:
- M.D., M.D./Ph.D. If M.D., must be board certified (within seven (7) years) or an active candidate for board certification and eligible for Hawaii medical license.
- Current recipient of an independent research award from federal, state, or private sources.
- Experience in BSL-3 pathogens, animal models of BSL-3 pathogens, host-pathogen interactions.
- Experience in International research.
