Assistant/Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and Special Education

Empire State University invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Early Childhood Education and Special Education within a fully online and virtual program. This program serves students across New York State, preparing them to meet the diverse needs of young children and children with disabilities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to online teaching, inclusive education, and continuous program improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Early Childhood Education, Educational Studies, and Special Education in a fully online and virtual format.
  • Design and revise online courses using best practices in digital pedagogy and accessibility.
  • Supervise and support teacher candidates during field placements across New York State.
  • Advise and mentor students through ongoing educational planning, course selection, and degree concurrence.
  • Engage in scholarly research and contribute to the field through publications and presentations.
  • Participate in university, college, and departmental committees.
  • Contribute to program assessment, accreditation processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure alignment with state certification requirements, institutional goals, and NYSED requirements.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  • Licensure or certification in Early Childhood and/or Special Education.
  • Experience teaching K-12 students with demonstrated expertise in both early childhood and special education.
  • College or university level teaching experience.
  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.
  • Ability to work in a distributed faculty environment.
  • Ability to teach and develop courses.
  • An active scholarly agenda.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with teacher preparation and certification requirements in New York State.
  • Experience with program assessment and accreditation aligned to state and national policy or professional organizations (e.g., ISTE, CEC, NAEYC, AAQEP).
  • Experience with teaching and mentoring in online learning environments.
  • Experience with academic program development.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.

Special Information:

This position is located in New York State and will serve students across the state. Regional travel to support field work will be required, along with travel to fulfill university-wide obligations, including biannual travel to Saratoga Springs, New York. Office hours will vary in accordance with student needs. Periodic evening and weekend engagement will also be required. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position. Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: Tenure-track, assistant/associate professor, salary range from $72,000 to $80,000, appointment and salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications.
