Position Description

The Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity (OMII) is a growing academic unit committed to excellence in biomedical sciences integration, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial pathology, periodontology, and translational research. The department maintains strong collaborative relationships across Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital (now MGB). The Department is seeking applications for the position of Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor of Oral Medicine (OM) and/or Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (OMP). This is a full-time faculty appointment. The academic rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor and salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. HSDM offers a unique interdisciplinary environment for teaching, research, service, and clinical activity, central to our mission at HSDM and the University.

The successful applicant will report directly to Department Chair and will provide educational leadership by serving as Course Director for discipline-specific courses, clinic-based teaching overseeing student assessment, and faculty calibration. Responsibilities also include administrative leadership as Discipline Director, contributing to accreditation documentation, on-going curriculum improvement, and coordinating clinical rotations with affiliated hospitals. The successful candidate will mentor and support independent and collaborative research activities associated with OM/OMP.

Clinically, the faculty member will supervise DMD students for OM/OMP in the clinic, support head and neck cancer screening and diagnostic services. An option to participate in patient care and practice is available. The faculty member will be available for OM/OMP consultations in the teaching clinic for both DMD and graduate students and will have the opportunity to participate in clinical practice (20%). Clinical or bench research opportunities are available either through laboratories at HSDM or in collaboration with Harvard-affiliated institutions in the Longwood area. Other responsibilities include mentoring DMD and graduate students in research and serving on thesis advisory committees.

This position is foundational to sustaining the academic integrity of the DMD and AGE programs and ensures compliance with CODA standards, continuity of curricular leadership, accreditation readiness, and structured research mentorship. The faculty member will help maintain HSDM's academic mission in OM/OMP and support strategic growth in biomedical sciences and translational oral health research.

Assignment of these responsibilities is based on individual interests, the unique abilities of the individual, and the needs of the School.

Basic Qualifications

  • DDS or DMD degree (or international equivalent)
  • Completion of an advanced postgraduate training program in Oral Medicine and/or Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Oral Medicine and/or Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (as applicable)
  • Eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts, whether full or limited faculty licensure, is required
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly activity and academic productivity

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in course leadership or academic administration
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship
  • Evidence of research productivity or potential for sustained scholarly impact
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MS, PhD, DMSc) in a related biomedical field preferred

Salary Range

The salary range for an Assistant Professor is $125,000 to $180,000. The salary range for an Associate Professor is $165,000 to $250,000. Posted salary ranges are based on a full time equivalent.
