Position Summary
NMHU seeks to recruit counselor education faculty who enthusiastically support the University’s strong commitment to the academic success of all of our students, including students of color, students with disabilities, students who are the first generation to college, veterans, students with diverse socio-economic backgrounds, and students of diverse sexual orientations and gender expressions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Tenure-track faculty teach counseling courses and supervise practicum/internship. The normal teaching load is 24 credit hours per academic year except for the first-year. Tenure-track faculty teach 18 credit hours during their first year of service. Faculty engage in service activities including curriculum development; recruitment; advisement, and retention of culturally and linguistically diverse students. They nurture program relations with area schools, agencies, and community behavioral health centers, including establishing practicum and internship placements. They maintain a program of scholarly research and activity.
Faculty share duties as they arise; participate actively in professional organizations and university committees; and, work to improve the counseling program continuously. In addition, this person will carry an advisee load of about 20 – 25 graduate counseling students. Faculty members are required to be available to students by scheduling and honoring office hours and by special appointment when necessary. Faculty hold office hours that correspond to the locations and modalities of their courses. To facilitate academic advising, at least 2.5 office hours are held at the faculty member’s Location of Record in the faculty member’s office.
Full-time faculty members are engaged and paid on the basis of an academic year contract, including days when the university is open, and classes are not in session. The work year is normally defined by the academic calendar. Participation in faculty development week and commencement exercises is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in counselor education or receive official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 11th, 2025; or, have a related doctoral degree and have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. ( ABD may be considered under special circumstances.) The candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of professional experience as a professional counselor and possess, or be eligible for, professional licensure in counseling. In addition, candidates must have demonstrated knowledge and experience in various teaching modalities including on-ground, online synchronous, online asynchronous, and/or blended learning. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have an established professional identity as a counselor educator; be a graduate of a CACREP Accredited Doctoral Program; demonstrate knowledge and experience with teaching courses across the CACREP core; and, have experience in the professional development of clinical skills at the Master’s level.
The candidate will have or be eligible for licensure as an independent clinical practitioner ( LPCC ) in the State of New Mexico; have three or more years of experience as a professional in clinical mental health counseling; be involved with professional counseling organizations; and, be experienced with CACREP accreditation processes. The ideal candidate will have training and experience as a school counselor and will have demonstrated successful experience designing and teaching online courses.
