Assistant Clinical Professor - Early Literacy

Indiana University Bloomington, the flagship campus of Indiana University, is seeking a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the School of Education. Across the School, the clinical faculty role generally consists of 60% teaching and 40% service, with a teaching load of 3 courses/semester, or 18 credits over the fall and spring semesters.
Position Responsibilities
- Teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate literacy methods courses in early childhood and elementary education that prepare teacher candidates to apply advanced expertise reading methods in PK-6 classrooms.
- Cultivate strong field-based bidirectional relationships with local K-12 partners; examples of goals for these relationships include:
- Support and enhance students’ literacy course instruction and early field experiences by aligning our methods to curriculum, instruction, and assessment in use in local schools.
- Collaborate with local host teachers who support teacher candidates as they develop literacy skills.
- Work with local schools to identify and develop teachers’ Science of Reading knowledge and skills to meet Indiana mandates through school-based Science of Reading professional development.
- Collaborate on projects with local partners to develop exemplary reading education schools and classrooms for our students’ early field experiences.
- Design and teach courses that meet Indiana and International Dyslexia Association standards for the Science of Reading in a range of modalities (in-person and online) and at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
- Recruit, supervise, advise, and mentor adjunct faculty who teach early literacy methods courses.
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in literacy education, or related field.
- Expertise in early literacy instruction, including the Science of Reading
- Teaching experience in early both childhood grades (pre-k to grade 3) and postsecondary.
Preferred Qualifications
- University experience in teaching, leading, and supervising Science of Reading methods courses in early literacy, literacy foundations, and assessment.
- Proven ability to maintain strong ties with local school partners, and to recruit, train, supervise, and mentor instructors.
- Experience in curriculum development and implementation of Science of Reading in early childhood teacher education courses
- K-6 classroom teaching experience
- K-6 school leadership experience as an instructional coach or reading specialist
