Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration
Job Description
Reporting to the Dean for the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD) and working collaboratively with other members of college leadership, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration is responsible for leadership and management of activities in the areas of financial, facility, and IT operations for the college in support of AAD's strategic priorities and values. The assistant dean is an integral member of the dean’s executive leadership committee and serves as the chief fiscal officer for the college.
Key responsibilities and expectations of the position include:
- Providing strategic oversight for the fiscal operations of the college, inclusive of budget development, communication, implementation, and evaluation.
- Overseeing budget allocations to each of the four schools, coordinating and evaluating requests for resources, monitor mid-year and year-end balances, and assist school directors, the dean, and others in addressing unit financial issues in a timely way.
- Actively managing and strategically evaluating the college's resources, ensuring that funds are stewarded appropriately as well as allocated and deployed for maximum benefit.
- Preparing long- and short-range financial goals and objectives for AAD, including modeling and forecasting prospective revenues and expenditures under different assumptions and scenarios; exhibit a mastery of the Virginia Tech Partnership for an Incentive Based Budget (PIBB) financial model; and educating the AAD community on the model, its principles, and the college's financial position.
- Developing and implementing college-wide business administration policies and best practices in consultation with functional leaders as needed.
- Assisting the dean and other members of the AAD executive team in management analysis and planning in preparation for initiatives or issue response.
- Reviewing and recommending operational efficiencies and improvements in all functional areas of the senior management area.
- Serving as liaison to VT Facilities regarding capital projects, building/ facility improvements, and lease agreements.
- Managing the college’s space allocations, renovations, and internal relocations.
- Leading AAD's fiscal community of practice.
The successful candidate will be creative and highly collaborative; have the proven ability to assess the financial viability of alternative funding opportunities and provide guidance to members of college leadership and school business teams. They will have the skills to establish trusting relationships within the college and across the university. They will also be adept at conducting difficult conversations in a respectful, collegial manner, and building consensus. Additionally, the successful candidate will be able to enhance the high-performing, inclusive financial community that exists within the college.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, or related field as well as substantial budgeting and financial experience;
- Demonstrated experience providing analyses, projections, and recommendations in matters of finance, management, operations, and planning.
- Proven record of financial administrative experience, including management of multi-million dollar budget(s).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience in strategic planning and policy development.
- Demonstrated skill in working collaboratively within a complex organization.
- Advanced spreadsheet and data management software skills.
- Ability to perform a variety of complicated tasks simultaneously and to work independently in a highly visible, fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Proven collaborator with a record of building and maintaining positive relationships with various constituents.
- Commitment to confidentiality and integrity, attention to detail, and accuracy in all facets of responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in business administration, finance, or related field.
- Knowledge of Virginia Tech financial and personnel policies and procedures and their related enterprise systems.

Exempt: Not eligible for overtime

Salary range is $140,000 - $155,000 per year
