Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Dean of Admission position. The Assistant Dean of Admission is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $55,847 - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Assistant Dean of Admission is a meaningful position within the Office of Admission's year-round cycle serving as one of the members of the admission staff responsible for first-year and transfer recruitment and evaluation, outreach both on- and off-campus, and participating as a voting member of the first-year and transfer admission committees.

The Assistant Dean has significant responsibility within the transfer and military-affiliated outreach team coordinating aspects of Amherst's community college transfer initiative including building and implementing creative recruitment and yield strategies. Along with the Associate Dean, the Assistant Dean cultivates partnerships with transfer and veteran-centered organizations and is responsible for aspects of Amherst's Community College Transfer Open House, Warrior-Scholar Project and Amherst's U.S. Service Member/Veteran Travel Grant. Amherst's community college transfer and U.S. service member/veteran initiatives are grounded in the College's commitment to enrolling a talented and diverse student body.

Working with the Amherst College Office of Admission requires a desire to engage on issues of antiracism and equity in educational opportunities. Evening and weekend work sometimes required. This position is eligible for participation in Amherst's hybrid work program (workers must reside in Massachusetts or Connecticut to participate).

Summary of Responsibilities:

Student Recruitment and Evaluation

  • Create recruitment strategies and lead all aspects of recruitment travel within assigned geographic regions
  • Conduct in-person and virtual presentations and workshops for groups up to 250 prospective students, guests and counselors
  • Cultivate relationships with high-school counselors, community college advisors and Community Based Organizations (CBOs)
  • Review applications for first-year and transfer admission including primary oversight of applicants within assigned regional territories
  • Participate as a voting member of the first-year and transfer admission committees
  • Build and run queries for use and analysis in recruitment strategies, admission programs and application review via the Office of Admission's CRM Slate

Transfer and U.S. Military-Connected Program Management

  • Alongside the Associate Dean, serve as a leader within the transfer & U.S. service member/veteran outreach team
  • Oversee Amherst's community college transfer initiative (CCTI) with the primary goal of recruiting first-generation, low-income (FLI) students from two-year institutions
  • Develop new and build upon existing partnerships with college access organizations serving target student populations
  • Coordinate on-campus and virtual student programming for students including Amherst's U.S. Service Member/Veteran Travel Grant, Community College Transfer Open House and Warrior-Scholar Project
  • Build targeted student communications for use in print and online
  • Design and implement yield programming for admitted transfer and military-connected students
  • Assist with the transfer credit review process and partner with members of the Office of the Registrar and Office of Student Affairs through the admission process and enrollment of new students

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid Driver's License and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
  • 2 - 3 years of experience in higher education admission or a related field
  • The ability to work with constituencies from varied racial, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds
  • Strong presentation skills; can bring to life programming that tells the story of a dynamic residential liberal arts environment to a wide-ranging audience
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to communicate effectively with an array of constituencies, including prospective applicants, military-affiliated communities, parents, high school counselors, alumni, faculty and staff
  • Proficiency in and ability to quickly learn and apply software (e.g., Google Workspace/Microsoft Office, Slack, Workday, Zoom)
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and think independently while working in a dynamic team environment
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills including the flexibility to balance multiple priorities with reliable attention to detail
  • Availability to travel approximately 15 - 20 days for recruitment (may include international travel) including driving to/from community colleges, high schools and college fairs for recruitment
  • Ability to handle confidential information with respect and discretion

Preferred

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience with admission management systems and relational databases such as the CRM Slate
  • Experience with creating, implementing and assessing strategic programs and initiatives
  • Familiarity with military-affiliated communities and/or experience working with transfer students
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English
