Mount Saint Mary's University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Director of Aquatics to join the Department of Sports, Recreation, and Wellness. This pivotal role involves overseeing the aquatics programs, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants, and managing the university's aquatic facilities. The Assistant Director of Aquatics will play a critical role in promoting health and wellness through diverse and inclusive aquatic programming.

Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles) and Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles)

Start Date: Immediately

Annual Salary Rate Range: $70,304.04 - $72,500.00

Monthly Salary Rate Range: $5,858.67- $6,041.67

Duties and Responsibilities:

Aquatic Facility Operations and Management:

  • Oversees the daily operations of aquatic facilities, ensuring they meet health and safety standards
  • Manages the scheduling and logistics for the Chalon Wellness Pavilion Pool and Doheny Wellness Center Pool
  • Ensures the maintenance and proper functioning of all aquatic equipment and facilities.
  • Coordinates pool maintenance and annual inspections, maintaining Certified Pool Operator credentials

Staff Leadership and Development:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates a team of lifeguards and aquatic instructors
  • Develops and implements training programs, including in-service training and unannounced safety drills
  • Fosters a positive and inclusive environment that supports staff growth and development

Program Development and Implementation:

  • Designs and leads various aquatics programs and certifications, such as lifeguard training, swim lessons, and water safety courses
  • Develops and implements community outreach initiatives to promote aquatics programs and engage diverse populations
  • Evaluates and assesses current programs to ensure they meet industry standards and the needs of the times

Risk Management and Safety:

  • Develops and enforces policies and procedures to ensure the safety and compliance of the aquatic facilities
  • Conducts regular safety audits and emergency response drills
  • Addresses and resolves any risk management or safety issues promptly
  • Develops and coordinates comprehensive training and continued education programs for all department staff, ensuring consistent application of safety protocols and procedures across all areas
  • Conducts regular safety audits and emergency response drills, tracking certification expiration dates and administering renewal courses as needed

Customer Service and Communication:

  • Provides excellent customer service to all aquatic facility users.
  • Maintains clear and effective communication regarding schedules, policies, and program information
  • Collaborates with the campus Marketing and Communications team to update signage, schedules, and the aquatics section of the university website as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

Abilities and Skills:

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field
  • Master's degree in a related field is preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience managing aquatics facilities and/or coordinating is preferred
  • Certified Pool Operator Certification, or acquisition within 6 months of Employment is preferred
  • Experience with budget management and administrative functions related to aquatics operations is preferred
  • Experience developing and leading successful aquatics programs is preferred
  • Aquatics programming, preferably in a collegiate or community recreation setting is preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Lifeguard certification and First Aid/CPR/AED certification or acquisition within 90 days of employment.
  • Certifications such as Lifeguard Instructor, First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, Aquatic Facility Operator, or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is preferred
