Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has the privilege and responsibility of being the primary point of contact for students seeking admission to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as undergraduates. In its role evaluating first-year and transfer students, the office works tirelessly to identify, recruit, admit, and welcome students who will positively contribute to our campus, state, and nation.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a hard-working, caring, and collaborative professional to serve as an Assistant Director for Community Outreach and Admissions for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The position will be an active member of the community and surrounding counties; collaborate with local districts, schools, counties, the Carolina College Advising Corps, and community-based organizations; participate in school and local events; counsel students, parents, and high school counselors about financial aid and admission to Carolina; and collaborate with others to develop and implement innovative methods of recruiting, evaluating, and enrolling talented students from the local area. The individual will read admissions applications and serve as a voting member of the admissions committee.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Requires critical thinking, sound judgment, creativity, and a passion to help students overcome obstacles and realize their college-going potential. Strong writing, public speaking, and presentation skills. Ability to work with both students and adults in a professional and courteous manner. An interest in engaging in both admissions review and recruitment activities within their respective seasons, understanding there are months focused heavily on travel and months focused heavily on application review.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Familiarity with the Triangle and surrounding counties, as well as counties across Eastern North Carolina. One to two years of experience in admissions, recruitment, student aid, college access, education, or a related field are preferred. Proficiency in a second language, especially Spanish.
