Duties & Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director will be a key member of the Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO) leadership team. This individual will help oversee and provide essential services related to case management and student outreach for VCU’s population of students with disabilities. Additionally, they will provide supervision for SAEO’s Access Specialists (case managers). The Assistant Director will also collaborate with students, faculty, and campus partners to meet the needs of our student population. This position will primarily be responsible for overseeing several key aspects of SAEO operations.
- Leadership: Provides leadership and direction for Access Specialists and aspects of the SAEO office, supporting the operational and strategic goals of the department.
- Support other areas of SAEO and collaborate as part of the SAEO team.
- Case Management:
- Supervision: Hires, supervises, and manages the workload of Access Specialists; provides appropriate staff development opportunities
- Assists in hiring and aiding other SAEO positions, as needed
- Provides appropriate staff and student employee development opportunities; and establishes job standards and expectations.
- Case Management: Assists in leading and managing the office’s Case Management operations.
- Assists Associate Director and Director in overseeing and executing the interactive process and all aspects of case management, including aiding in training case manager staff and triaging concerns
- Assists with coordinating non-academic accommodation requests (housing, dining, and parking)
- Manages a caseload of SAEO students as assigned by the Director, including conducting intake interviews; determining eligibility for reasonable accommodations; and facilitating the implementation of accommodations with staff and campus partners.
- Works with faculty, staff, and students to provide dispute resolution over the appropriate provision of accommodations throughout the University.
- Assessment: Assists Director and Associate Director in assessment planning and data collection for SAEO.
- Engage in ongoing evidence-based assessment and improvement of support to students with disabilities. Collect and analyze data relevant for periodic reporting.
- Outreach: Oversees student and staff outreach:
- Facilitates and conducts training related to accessibility and disability compliance for VCU staff.
- Creates orientation-focused and transition events to educate prospective and incoming students and families on SAEO.
- Work collaboratively to promote inclusive learning environments and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, as pertains to in accordance with best practices and state and federal regulations.
- Other: Participate in ongoing professional development, including attendance at conferences and meetings relevant to job responsibilities.
- Other: Serve on VCU committees, as appropriate to the role.
- Other: Complete other projects as assigned by the Director in support of unit/divisional goals and initiatives
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or relevant professional experience.
3+ years direct experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and/or other disabilities in an educational setting.
3+ years of professional supervisory experience
Substantial knowledge of legislation pertaining to post-secondary education and students with disabilities. Specifically, the candidate will need to have knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sections 504 and Section 508 of the Rehab. Act.
Experience providing academic support and/or learning interventions for students with disabilities.
Demonstrated ability to provide supervision and training for entry-level to mid-career staff and/or student workers.
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a relevant field such as psychology, counseling, special education, vocational rehabilitation etc.
4+ years direct experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and/or other disabilities in a higher education setting.
4+ years of professional supervisory experience
Salary Range: $63,700 - $66,000
