Responsibilities

  • Work with the ASC and NHMFL community of material/magnet scientists and engineers by collaborating on various research tasks. Support the daily operations of users in ASC’s various magnets and instruments. Provide organizational and technical leadership when planning and carrying out experiments in these facilities and ensure that they are operating reliably.
  • Carry out specialized, high level engineering tasks to maintain and operate magnets, cryostats, electronic instruments, characterization apparatus (including magnetometers, transport and heat capacity measurement probes and sample holders) and other high field measurement facilities at the ASC. Be able to understand instrumentation controls and data acquisition systems. Be able to troubleshoot instruments, to design the best strategy for solving technical issues, and to maintain proper records of such issues and best solutions. These systems operate in cryogenic environments and require sound experience with the operation of cryogenic systems. As all of these systems are operated by computers, general IT knowledge is required and exposure to and some experience with NI LabView software programming is expected. Experience with Quantum Design systems or similar apparatus is expected.
  • Maintain and develop operations of a comprehensive materials R&D magnet laboratory for forefront research and development of new materials and magnet engineering. Ensure instruments are maintained and consistently operate safely. Interface with manufacturers, vendors and suppliers, particularly organizing the timely replenishing of cryogens.
  • Participate in outreach activities by interacting with the public and explaining various ASC capabilities during tours and open house. Interact with numerous technical visitors from domestic and international laboratories and industries.

Qualifications

Academic master's degree or highest-level terminal degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field of specialization or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience and otherwise qualified to perform assigned duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience with Quantum Design systems or similar apparatus is highly preferred.
