Postdoctoral Research Associate - Department of Physics & Astronomy
Description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. Under the leadership of Professor Lian Li, the Associate will conduct research in the synthesis and atomic-scale characterization of quantum materials. By combining molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth with in-situ low-temperature, high-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), the goal is to uncover how strain, proximity effects, strong correlations, and spin-orbit interactions drive emergent quantum phenomena in topological insulators, Fe-based superconductors, and quantum magnets such as Kagome and altermagnets. Facilities available at Prof. Li's lab for this position include:
- Unisoku 400mK USM 1300 STM with a 9-2-2 T vector magnet
- Omicron low-temperature (5-300K) STM with Q-plus non-contact AFM
- Scienta DA 30 ARPES system
- Integrated system within situ sample transfer between MBE, STM, and ARPES
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: Researching MBE growth of quantum materials and their characterization using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy; attending research conferences; researching scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures most appropriate for research goals; performing independent experimental data analysis and maintaining detailed logs of work related activities, including accurate laboratory records and data on research methods, procedures, and results; maintaining lab equipment; keeping accurate inventory of lab assets; monitoring and assuring proper use and conditions of lab equipment; assuring compliance with research protocols and safety requirements; writing and presenting research/study status reports for review and use of the Principal Investigator; and preparing results of experimental findings for presentation to colleagues and the sponsor at professional/technical conferences and/or, for publication in scientific journals.
Qualifications
Professional Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Physics or a related field is required. In addition, the successful applicant must show evidence of: the ability to conduct experiments using molecular beam epitaxy and scanning tunneling microscopy (at least 1 year of experience using both techniques); demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills; and demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills.
Application:
To apply, please visit WVU Careers. Upload the following: 1) a curriculum vitae; 2) an application letter that discusses experience and interest in the research area. The screening process will begin December 7, 2025. For more information, contact Dr. Lian Li (lian.li@mail.wvu.edu).
Morgantown, WV is a growing university city. The area offers abundant outdoor recreation and the cultural opportunities of a college town. It is within easy driving distance of Pittsburgh, PA (70 mi) and is within a day's driving distance to Washington DC and Columbus, OH (200 mi).
