Assistant Instructional Technician (Part-time) - Sam Fox - Workshops
Position Summary
The Assistant Instructional Technician is a part-time staff position that will support the Sam Fox Shops Instructional Technicians in teaching and creative activity as part of a student-facing team. The Assistant Technician will work with instructional technicians and faculty to informally instruct students in process and craft across multiple shops and disciplines with a focus on ceramics. The position will work with technicians and monitors to maintain the cleanliness, organization, and upkeep of shops across Sam Fox School which include ceramics, woodworking, metal working, and foundry facilities. The Assistant Technician will help to maintain safe day-to-day operation of the ceramic, wood, and metal shops in Walker Hall and will work across all shops and making spaces as needed. The Assistant Technician will be a part of a team that creates a welcoming environment in the shops and breaks down barriers for students with limited experience to appropriately use the shops, including individual instruction, process demonstration, and safety training. The Assistant Technician will use strong people management skills while working alongside technicians and faculty to foster a positive learning and making environment.
The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at WashU in St. Louis is a unique collaboration in architecture, art, and design education within the context of an internationally recognized research university. Comprised of the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design, the College and Graduate School of Art, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum, the Sam Fox School offers a depth of professional education in conjunction with one of the premier university art museums. The School has a strong commitment to social justice, environmental justice, and community-based work, and supports a diverse population of approximately 200 graduate students and 530 undergraduates.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assists the Instructional Technician in the individual and group instruction and guidance in the use of shop tools, materials, and processes to support teaching and creative activity across the school.
- Works alongside faculty and Technicians to support students as they learn skills and techniques needed to successfully undertake academic and co-curricular projects.
- Learns new practices/methodologies onsite to assist in keeping faculty and students current with emerging practices.
- Organizes and maintains clean, safe shops in Walker Hall.
- Maintains safety protocols.
- Assists in the maintenance, repair, and/or replace machines, systems, and tools in shop as required.
- Assists in supporting facilities needs across the Sam Fox School.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:

Shop environment with noise.
Occasionally, non-standard hours may be required to meet the training availability of students and faculty.
Physical Effort
Lifting capacity of 60 pounds on regular occasions.
Occasional off campus locations are possible but not frequent.
Equipment
Exposure to various odors, wood, plaster, and some airborne particulates.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors of Fine Arts, or other related degree.

Experience working with students and faculty.
At least one year as a shop technician or equivalent experience.
Experience working with individuals who have a range of familiarity with shop.

$21.17 - $32.85 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
