Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
Position Summary
Serve as an Assistant Coach with the highly competitive, Division I Men’s Basketball Program; assist with administration as it relates to recruiting, budgets, traveling, public relations, fundraising, camps, and clinics; organizing and conducting practices and competitions, administering and promoting all phases of the UGA Men’s Basketball Program. Works with the Head Men’s Basketball Coach to support the efficient and productive operation of the men’s basketball program. Provide support to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach in various areas of the program.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related coaching experience
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a student-athlete, support staff or coach for Division I men’s basketball program.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Experience as Head or Associate/Assistant basketball coach.
- Knowledge of rules of the game and playing strategies.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. Management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with computers, especially using Excel.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
- Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), SEC, UGA, and UGAAA rules and regulations.
- Ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, academic counselors, parents, and coaches.
- Ability to work independently on multiple assignments.
- Ability to organize as well as prepare for events and travel in advance is imperative.
Physical Demands
- The employee will lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
- Close and distance vision, and peripheral vision involved in work.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but escalates to high during practice and athletic competitions.
- Driving as needed to perform job duties.
Duties/Responsibilities
Assist Head Coach with organizing and administering all phases of a NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball program including, but not limited to:
- Assistant Coaching
- Training and preparing student-athletes for competition
- Overseeing conditioning programs
- Supervising and evaluating student-athletes
Percentage of time: 35
Ensures that the administrative support, and development and fundraising support activities of the men’s basketball program minimize the likelihood of violations of NCAA rules and regulations and that activities supporting the program are in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. Contributes to a respectful work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage and support a workforce with diverse backgrounds.
Percentage of time: 20
Evaluating and recruiting qualified student-athletes to the University of Georgia whose athletic and personal skills make them highly competitive in the SEC and nationally, and whose academic potential makes them good candidates for a meaningful academic experience and graduation at the University of Georgia. Coordinating recruiting travel and visit itineraries.
Percentage of time: 15
Assist the Head Coach and Academic Advisors in monitoring the academic performance and general well-being of student-athletes. Assisting the athletes with community service projects and helping them realize and achieve full potential in each area.
Percentage of time: 15
Assist with game night activities at both home and away competitions to include assisting with recruitment of prospects prior to tip-off, including facilities and campus tours.
Percentage of time: 10
Other duties as assigned.
