Position Summary

The Department of Geology (geology.uga.edu) in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with a focus on critical mineral resources. We especially seek applicants in the areas of Economic Geology or Geophysics.

These positions will strengthen our long-standing expertise in economic geology and geophysics and will serve as a foundation for transformative, interdisciplinary research across the University and beyond. UGA is committed to expanding research capacity and partnerships in these strategic areas, offering new faculty the opportunity to shape the future of geoscience innovation in the southeast and across the nation. Candidates for both positions are expected to establish a funded research program that advances their scientific fields through peer-reviewed publications, industry partnerships, and connections to governmental agencies. The successful applicants are expected to play a key developmental role in UGA initiatives, which aim to produce the next generation of scientists to address mineral and energy-related resource issues. Graduate (MS and PhD) and undergraduate (BS) teaching and research advisement are critical, and the successful applicant will be expected to engage at all levels.

Economic Geology

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research projects focused on understanding the formation, exploration, and production of critical minerals deposits and to teach Economic Geology and Exploration Techniques in both classroom and field settings. Integration of field, laboratory, and modeling techniques associated with investigating these systems will be viewed favorably. UGA has multiple extant core analytical research facilities (https://research.uga.edu/core-facilities/), and the candidate is expected to collaborate with these centers and develop new technologies as needed. The successful applicant will have access to the Gilles Allard Collection, one of the largest Economic Geology collections in the world (https://digitalcollections.franklin.uga.edu/pages/allard).

Geophysics

The successful candidate will teach Geophysical Exploration Techniques and related classes in their area of expertise in specific ore deposit types, including the application of IP, resistivity, and EM techniques to improve our ability to find and responsibly produce such resources. Integration of field, laboratory, and modeling techniques associated with investigating these systems will be viewed favorably. Applicants will be expected to conduct research projects focused on the development and application of geophysical techniques to the exploration, assessment, or characterization of critical mineral deposits. Integration of field, laboratory, and modeling techniques associated with investigating these systems will be viewed favorably.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2026, and will continue until filled. Required applicant documents include a CV, cover letter, teaching and research philosophy statements, and a list of 3 references with contact information. For questions, please contact search committee chair Dr. Doug Crowe at dcrowe@uga.edu.
