Position Summary

The College of Environment and Design (CED) at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor focused on health and the built environment, broadly defined.

The successful candidate will contribute to one or more of the CED’s professional program areas—Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, or Urban Planning and Design—and will teach a variety of courses appropriate to their professional background, including lecture- and seminar-based courses (for all program areas) and, where relevant, design studios (for candidates in Landscape Architecture or Urban Planning and Design).

The position provides opportunities to connect with UGA’s emerging health initiatives, including the new Medical School, the new School of Nursing, and a forthcoming horticultural therapy certificate program.

Because this is a CED-wide search, candidates’ specific teaching and research contributions will vary by professional program area:

  • Historic Preservation
    Candidates may examine connections between health, community wellbeing, cultural landscapes, environmental justice, adaptive reuse, the heritage of medical- and health-related built environments, or the health implications of historic environments. Teaching may include preservation planning, cultural landscapes, interpretation, preservation theory, or related coursework.
  • Landscape Architecture
    Candidates may focus on health-supportive design, health care facility design, healthy living, therapeutic landscapes, human–environment interactions, or related areas. Teaching responsibilities may include design studios and seminar or lecture courses aligned with expertise.
  • Urban Planning and Design
    Candidates may focus on healthy communities planning, environmental justice, transportation and health, or regional planning. Teaching may include planning studios, methods courses, and seminars related to health and the built environment.

This is a tenure-track, 9-month academic-year appointment beginning August 1, 2026.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Please provide the following:

  • A letter of interest noting your job qualifications and teaching interests;
  • Curriculum vita;
  • A portfolio illustrating built or designed works (for Landscape Architecture candidates); research productivity; professional practice experience; student work; or other creative work;
  • The names of four references with title, email address, and phone number.
  • Applicants with prior teaching experience should submit samples of course syllabi, student work, and course evaluations. These may be integrated into the portfolio, if preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

A terminal degree appropriate for appointment within one of CED’s professional program areas.

Additional Requirements

A terminal degree appropriate for appointment within one of CED’s professional program areas:

  • For Landscape Architecture candidates, a professionally accredited terminal degree in landscape architecture (MLA degree or equivalent), or an accredited BLA degree with a terminal degree in an allied design discipline (e.g., Master of Architecture);
  • For Historic Preservation candidates, MHP or a related terminal degree (e.g., Master of Architecture, PhD in Public History);
  • For Urban Planning candidates, a PhD in Urban Planning and Design or a closely related field
Candidates must demonstrate scholarly, professional practice, or creative engagement with issues related to health and the built environment, broadly interpreted.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • Teaching experience (at least one year) at the university level.
  • Advanced research training (e.g., PhD, or other educational credentials) in a relevant field.
  • For Landscape Architecture candidates, professional licensure is advantageous; For Urban Planning candidates, AICP certification is advantageous.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • We welcome candidates whose work examines the relationships between human health, well-being, and the environments people inhabit—whether through design, planning, historic preservation, cultural landscape studies, environmental justice, or related fields.
  • We welcome candidates with the vision and ability to create and offer a new, large-format general education course connecting the topic of health and the built environment with USG core education areas such as ethics, critical thinking, sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.
