BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY (BSU) invites qualified applicants to join our team as an Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Performance, Sport & Health Sport Management. The Human Performance, Sport and Health program currently houses undergraduate and graduate-level programs including five BS degrees in Exercise Science, Community Health, Sport Management and teacher licensing opportunities in K-12 Physical Education and 5-12 Health Education. The HPSH program offers graduate level course work for add-on teaching licenses in Health Education and Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) for teachers already working in the field. In addition, the department offers several minor programs related to sport management, human performance, health promotion and a coaching certification program. The program provides students with opportunities to engage in conference participation, internships, student teaching and field experience in schools and various major clubs and service learning with the community. The department is fully committed to equity and to diversity in our faculty and students.
Responsibilities of the Assistant or Associate Professor of Human Performance, Sport & Health Sport Management include:
- Primarily teach on-campus undergraduate and graduate Sport Management content courses along with coaching certification, core curriculum courses, and courses related to human performance topics.
- Schedule and supervise candidates in various internship placements.
- Knowledge of accreditation requirements and industry standards.
- Engage in scholarly activity appropriate to a tenure-track position.
- Participate in regular service to the department, university and community, and other associated faculty professional duties, including advising of undergraduate and graduate level students and contribute to student recruitment, retention and success.
- Actively contribute to an inclusive and respectful learning environment that serves a diverse student population.
- Responsible for curriculum development, maintenance and collaboration to incorporate interdisciplinary pathways with programming.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary teaching and distance learning delivery; involvement in activities that support Bemidji State University's Shared Fundamental Values: Civic engagement and leadership, international and multicultural understanding, belief in the power of the liberal arts and environmental stewardship.
- Applicant is expected to contribute to a collegial and supportive environment that advances departmental goals, including curriculum development, program/course assessment, and other departmental governance activities.
- Utilize D2L Brightspace Learning Platform and deliver distance online courses guided by best practices.
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
- Earned doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in Sport Management, Kinesiology, Business Administration (with sport emphasis), or a closely related discipline.
- ABD candidates will be considered if the doctorate is completed within a year of the start date of employment.
- Graduate degree or substantial graduate coursework in E-Sports, Recreation Management, Sport Management, or Outdoor Recreation and Leadership.
- Minimum of 2 years teaching experience at the college/university level. Substantial graduate assistant teaching experience will be considered as equivalent.
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in sport management, kinesiology, physical education, recreation management, business, or related field required; sport management preferred.
- Evidence of industry partnerships and ability to facilitate student experiential learning (e.g., internships, applied projects, service learning).
- Commitment to quality teaching is required through demonstrated effective communication skills, teaching skills, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, staff and colleagues.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Documented experience working in the sport industry, intercollegiate athletics, professional sports organizations, community recreation, or sport-related nonprofits.
- Experience in curriculum design, accreditation processes, or program assessment.
- Interest in developing innovative undergraduate or graduate program pathways or concentrations (e.g., Global Sport Leadership, Esports, Outdoor Recreation).
- Skills/ability to design and deliver in person, online courses and possibly Hyflex courses; experience with course management software, such as D2L Brightspace and knowledge of best practices with instructional design.
- Demonstrated experience working with and/or interest in working with students and colleagues from multicultural and diverse backgrounds, tribal nations or members, and using culturally responsive pedagogy and practice.
- Demonstrated expertise in sport leadership and/or coaching, with a strong foundation in recreation management, outdoor leadership or hospitality/tourism focus.
- Knowledge of or demonstrated involvement/membership in relevant professional state and national organizations (i.e. NASSM, COSMA).
- A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
