About the Position

The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a career-track Assistant Teaching Professor in Applied Artificial Intelligence beginning in August 2026. We are looking for an individual committed to instilling modern analytical and evidence-based practices in our undergraduate and graduate students at Heinz College and others from across Carnegie Mellon University.

We seek a scholar-practitioner who can prepare students to design, implement, evaluate, and responsibly deploy AI systems in a variety of organizational and societal contexts. The successful candidate will be a scholar-practitioner with a strong applied background in machine learning, data science, or AI systems development. Heinz students work at the intersection of technology, policy, and management, so we are especially interested in candidates who can translate technical AI methods into real-world applications across business, government, and nonprofit domains.

Heinz College is home to distinctive research centers and initiatives that explore the intersection of technology and society, including the Block Center for Technology and Society. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with these initiatives, contribute to co-curricular programming, and engage with faculty and students across the College.

Teaching and Curricular Focus

Courses may include (but are not limited to):

  • Applied machine learning and deep learning
  • Large language models and generative AI in practice
  • Responsible AI: fairness, interpretability, and governance
  • Applied AI for public policy and social impact

The position emphasizes experiential learning, with opportunities to create and lead project-based courses, supervise applied capstones, and collaborate with industry and government partners.

Responsibilities

  • Faculty on the teaching track at Heinz College are expected to teach an effective teaching load of 72 units, the equivalent of six full-semester length classes or twelve half-semester length classes (minis) per academic year.
  • Teach graduate-level applied AI and data science courses (in Pittsburgh and online, as appropriate).
  • Collaborate with academic programs to design new courses and curricular pathways in applied learning experiences that respond to evolving technologies and employer needs.
  • Integrate ethical and governance considerations into technical instruction.
  • Contribute to Heinz College's interdisciplinary community and to initiatives that advance responsible technology and innovation.
  • Participate in service to the College and University, including curriculum development and faculty committees.

Qualifications:

Required

  • A terminal degree (PhD, or equivalent) in computer science, information systems, data science, or a related field, or significant professional experience (5+ years) in applied AI or ML in industry, government, or non-profit settings.
  • Industry, government, or non-profit experience in building, deploying, or managing AI systems at scale.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness or potential for excellence in teaching at the graduate or undergraduate level.
  • Hands-on experience with modern data and tech infrastructure, AI tools and frameworks
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to teach technical content to interdisciplinary student audiences.

Preferred

  • Prior experience developing applied AI curricula or experiential learning courses.
  • Industry experience in building, deploying, or managing AI systems at scale.
  • Expertise in AI ethics, governance, or societal implications of AI.
  • Experience teaching international and/or professional master's students.
