The Department of Middle and High School Education (MHSE) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor /Associate Professor-Clinical Practices and Special Education-grades 7-12.

The Department of Middle and High School Education (MHSE) in the School of Education at Lehman College, City University of New York (Bronx, New York City) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of clinical practices in secondary teacher education and adolescent special education (and/or a related field). The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching, service, advocacy, leadership, and research in special education and teacher candidate practices leading to the implementation of evidence-based strategies that effectively support diverse learners with disabilities in real classroom settings across all subject areas at the secondary school level.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills for teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses (on campus and online) in multiple modalities. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise students, engage in and maintain an active program of research, scholarly work (including professional publications, presentations, grantsmanship), and service. The successful candidate also shares responsibility for committee and department assignments, performing administrative, supervisory, and other functions as assigned. This position reports directly to the chairperson of Middle and High School Education (MHSE).

This is not a remote position. While some online teaching or remote administrative work may be allowed, the role requires consistent on-campus engagement. Faculty are expected to maintain a regular on-campus presence for teaching, office hours, departmental and other activities.

About Lehman College School of Education (SOE)

Lehman College of The City University of New York is CUNY?s only senior college in the borough of the Bronx. A federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution, Lehman serves a diverse population of more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The School of Education (SOE) is one of the six schools within Lehman College. The SOE reflects the mission of the college in serving the Bronx, New York City, and surrounding region as an intellectual, economic, and cultural center. As the only public higher education school of education in the Bronx, SOE embraces a vision of preparing future educators to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population who themselves represent a racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic spectrum that remains one of the strengths of our state and community.

SOE is organized in three departments: Early Childhood and Childhood Education (ECCE); Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education (CLLSE); and Middle and High School Education (MHSE). SOE offers initial preparation advanced preparation programs in Literacy Studies, Mental Health and Educational Leadership, including a doctorate in Organizational Leadership. SOE houses several institutes and centers to advance educator preparation, professional development, and school-community engagement.

MHSE has nationally recognized and accredited undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare candidates to earn New York State teacher certifications in secondary content areas (English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies) as well as Dance P-12, ESOL P-12, Visual Arts P-12, Music P-12, and the Bilingual Extension 5-12. Faculty in the department are committed to the Lehman Urban Transformative Education framework adopted by Lehman's School of Education. Our goal is to prepare innovative and creative educators who inspire, influence and value others. We believe in the rich contribution of each of our educational partners in shaping our transformative practice.

Position Responsibilities

In a spirit of collegiality and professionalism, faculty are expected to foster a respectful, collaborative, and inclusive environment, upholding high ethical standards in teaching, research, and service. They are expected to work cooperatively toward the growth and development of their department and support student success. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship and professional development support.

Responsibilities include: Maintaining a teaching load of 18 credits per 9-month academic year. Faculty are expected to maintain a regular on-campus presence for teaching, office hours, departmental, and other activities. This includes collaborating with the SOE Cinical Practice and Partnership Office and other units to participate in and to facilitate off-campus site visits to partner schools to monitor and support the successful implementation of clinically rich, school-based placements and to strengthen collaborative relationships with school partners. The successful candidate will maintain an active research agenda that includes professional scholarship, presentations and grantsmanship.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Engage in student recruitment, application review, and admissions processes.
  • Support department and program operations and coordination to ensure effective student advisement, placement, and supervision.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across departments, schools, and the university to advance interdisciplinary and sponsored program initiatives
  • Engage in program-level and SOE accreditation
  • Pursue external funding opportunities to support research, program innovation, and continuous improvement efforts for themselves as researchers, the Department, the SOE, Lehman College, and the field.
  • Develop and maintain articulation agreements and educational partnerships with community colleges.
  • Engage in service to the university, college, school, and department through committee membership and related professional contributions
  • Assist with program hiring, staffing, mentoring, and supervision of part-time and adjunct faculty
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of program and institutional goals

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited university
  • Demonstrated expertise in mentoring pre- and in-service teacher development in clinical settings, educational assessment, experiential learning, and project-based learning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best-practices in urban secondary teacher education pre-service and in-service clinical and teacher induction practices
  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience teaching in public, secondary schools with diverse populations, including multilingual students.
  • Ongoing record of scholarship
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collegially as a team member

Preferred Requirements:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, multi-modal learning, anti-racist pedagogies, multilingualism, and culturally and linguistically responsive and sustaining pedagogy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Students With Disabilities 7-12 learning standards and curricula
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach adults in college level education programs in various modalities including in person, hybrid, hyflex, synchronous and asynchronous modalities.

COMPENSATION

Assistant $86,741 -$102,017

Associate $105,816 - $121,194
