The Department of Counseling, Leadership & Special Education in the College of Education at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is accepting applications for a 9 month tenure-track Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor of Instructional Leadership. The candidate selected for this position will start Fall 2026 or until filled.

Highly qualified applicants may be considered for Department Chair of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education position as part of the interview process. The Chair position is a 12-month, full-time position with a reduced teaching load.

The Department of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education offers undergraduate and graduate programs in special education and graduate programs in counseling, leadership, and special education. In particular, the Instructional Leadership Program area includes degree programs at the Master's (M.Ed.), Educational Specialist (Ed.S.), and Doctor of Education (Ed.D) levels.

Required Qualifications for the Faculty Position: The successful candidate must have:

  1. hold an earned doctorate in Instructional Leadership or the equivalent;
  2. have a minimum of three years of preK-12 experiences as an assistant principal, principal, or district level administrator and experience in public schools is preferred.
  3. be willing to teach in an online, face-to-face and/or off-site setting.
  4. teach graduate level instructional leadership courses,
  5. supervise leadership experiences in school and school district settings,
  6. develop and maintain university-school relationships,
  7. collaborate with diverse populations, and
  8. assume other teaching and professional responsibilities.
  9. evidence of scholarly productivity or a well-developed research agenda.

For consideration for the Department Chair position, we seek an individual with demonstrated evidence of:

  • academic administrative and leadership experience,
  • strengths in undergraduate and graduate teaching, including online teaching,
  • excellence in scholarship and research as evidenced by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, and
  • a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion

For candidates interested in the Department Chair position, the successful candidate must have:

  1. demonstrated experience in administration and/or leadership in higher education;
  2. experience or familiarity with accreditation processes;
  3. grant writing experience.

Under the direction of the Dean and in collaboration with faculty, the department chair will provide strategic and visionary leadership for the department and engage in activities that support the university's mission, vision, and core values.

The department chair's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • encouraging and supporting good teaching, scholarly activity, and professional development within the department,
  • planning and executing a strategic direction for the department, building and staffing the schedule of classes, overseeing the department budget and other resources, fostering team building, managing the department and its staff, working with diverse faculty and students in the department and across campus to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with external entities,
  • communicating and implementing college and university policies to the department, and advocating for departmental needs to the college and university,
  • working with the faculty to develop and review standards, curricula, and procedures, which provide adequate preparation of graduates for professional or further academic endeavor, and
  • leading student recruitment and retention efforts and ensuring department majors are appropriately advised.
