Position Summary

The College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in August 2026. The selected candidate will be expected to teach in our Master of Urban Planning and Design graduate planning program and our Urban Planning minor, pursue scholarly research, and provide public service and outreach.

The new faculty member will teach studio and lecture courses in at least two of the following areas: Urban Design, Physical Planning and Design, Land Use Planning, and Transportation. The selected candidate should be capable of teaching courses in Urban Design and Planning, including Studios and Graphic Representation, as well as specialized core courses and electives in land use planning and/or law.

About the College/Unit/Department

UGA’s College of Environment and Design (CED) is home to the oldest landscape architecture program in the Southeast and one of the largest BLA programs in the United States. In addition to the BLA and MLA programs, the College provides Masters of Historic Preservation, Masters of Urban Planning and Design, and PhD degrees, as well as certificates in Environmental Ethics, Cultural Landscapes, and Historic Preservation. The College’s global presence includes regular programming at UGA’s campus in Cortona, Italy, and a strong working relationship with Nanjing Forestry University and Beijing Forestry University. Embedded in an outstanding design school, the Master of Urban Planning and Design is an accredited program with a strong emphasis on physical and place-based city planning. The curriculum, centered around three planning and design studios, addresses the full range of regional, urban, community planning, design, and development issues. Since its inception in 2009, the program has attracted students from many national and international backgrounds, and its nearly 100% post-graduation job placement rate is a testament to its rigor and success.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in planning or a related field from an accredited university by August 1, 2026.

Additional Requirements

  • Demonstrated evidence in the practice of planning and design.
  • Evidence of university teaching.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • A degree in Architecture or Urban Design is highly desirable
  • Candidates should be comfortable with the planning studio pedagogy.
  • Candidates should have an interest or expertise at the intersection of health, well-being, and urban planning and design.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Preference will be given to candidates with topics that align with UGA or CED priorities, particularly those related to health and well-being. Additional preference may be given to candidates with a vision for course development and teaching of high-enrollment undergraduate courses with university-wide appeal, connecting disciplinary knowledge with interdisciplinary contemporary issues. Such courses play a key role in communicating the importance of the discipline to the institution and often recruit students to the Master’s program. The successful candidate shall be involved in professional development activities that contribute to the scholarship of teaching, research, and professional practice.
