Position description
The McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at St. Mary’s Hospital. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join the academic Division of General Surgery at the St. Mary’s Hospital—a teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Surgery and be expected to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in surgical education. They will join a collegial group of five general surgeons with expertise in colorectal, foregut, breast and hernia surgery.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in addressing the evolving clinical demands of our expanding community, with a dedicated focus on advancing our hernia and foregut service lines. We seek a distinguished General Surgeon with specialized expertise and fellowship training in advanced minimally invasive and gastrointestinal surgery.
The successful candidate will be expected to dedicate time to clinical duties such as surgery, outpatient clinics, emergency room visits and general surgery calls. The incumbent will also be expected to participate in educational and academic activities of the Division and Residency Program, as well as in the supervision of medical students and residents.
The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Candidates must:
- Have an MD degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
- Have completed General Surgical training with certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
- Have completed an accredited fellowship (either Royal College or American Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education);
- Be an academic surgeon licensed, or eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
- Be committed to clinical excellence, education, and/or research;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
McGill University is an English-language university where most teaching and research activities are conducted in the English language, thereby requiring English communication both verbally and in writing.
