The Hampton University Department of Counseling invites applications from qualified candidates for one full-time, nine-month position at the Assistant Professor level. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to serve on departmental, college and university committees; participate in Council of Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accreditation activities, and other faculty responsibilities as assigned.

The Department of Counseling is a vibrant innovative department with active and dedicated faculty members offering rigorous and rewarding curriculum. Faculty members are active teachers, engage in scholarly research, and provide service to the University and the greater Hampton Roads community.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates must be committed to teaching graduate courses in research methodology, cognition, and other discipline-related topics. Additionally, successful candidates are expected to advise counseling majors and hold office hours. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the scholarly advancement of the department through a productive research agenda that includes craftsmanship. Candidates should demonstrate dedication to the progress of the Counseling Department, the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and the University as a whole, through service activities.

Qualifications

Necessary Qualifications: Qualified candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision or related field with record of employment as a full-time faculty member in a Counselor Education program for minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2025 or otherwise meet CACREP core faculty eligibility requirements and hold licensure as a professional counselor in Virginia or other state.

Must have a background in supervising Master's students in practicum and internship experiences. Must be able to teach courses in Abnormal Psychology, Diagnosis and Treatment, as well as other clinical mental health courses. Must have an established research agenda and experience in seeking external funding. Experience with online counseling and delivering courses online is desired. Experience with online teaching is desired. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in research and craftsmanship.

Qualified candidates must meet the following:

  • Experience working with culturally diverse population.
  • Minimum of five years of university teaching experience including advising and supervising graduate students.
  • Direct experience with CACREP accreditation process.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical experience in mental health counseling.
  • Minimum of five years of university teaching experience including advising and supervising graduate students.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical experience in marriage and family therapy.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
