Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen to become part of the University of Birmingham and join our mission to deliver world-class University education as part of the Jinan-Birmingham Joint Institute MSc Bioinformatics programme in collaboration with Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics Education to support teaching across our Bioinformatics programmes in Birmingham, Dubai and Guangzhou. It is expected that the post-holder will support teaching in particular in the area of data-driven analysis for metabolomics and general omics.

The Jinan University – University of Birmingham Joint Institute (JBJI), is a joint venture based at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China, established in 2016. We will launch a new MSc Bioinformatics programme in September 2026. These programmes attract high quality students from across China and are taught in English. The programmes will be taught jointly by faculty travelling from the UK and local Jinan University faculty.

Main Responsibilities

You will be based within the Department of Cancer and Genomic Sciences on the main University of Birmingham campus in Birmingham and travel to Guangzhou for two periods per year of approximately one month each to deliver intensively taught modules.

You will organise and coordinate key modules and deliver teaching, particularly in the area of Machine Learning. In addition, you will be expected to contribute to the whole range of teaching and administration across the University’s data science programmes, including the supervision of individual research projects.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, plus a depth of expertise in modern Machine Learning for biological data, covering supervised and unsupervised learning. The candidate must have demonstrable teaching expertise in several of the following areas:

  • Bayesian learning and probabilistic modelling
  • Multimodal and integrative analysis, including multi-omics settings
  • Data visualisation and exploratory analysis for complex biological systems
  • Explainable models and model interpretation in applied contexts
  • Robust analysis of real-world data, including missingness, low quality samples, and noise

Candidates are encouraged to seek further information about the post by contacting Dr Richard Tuxworth, Head of Education for the School of Medical Sciences or Dr Anas Ahmad Rana, Programme Director for the MSc Bioinformatics JBJI.

Interviews will be held 5-8th May 2026.
