Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology (Focus on Abuse, Neglect, and Trauma)

Vibrant, multidisciplinary and innovative, the Faculty of Arts and Science is one of Université de Montréal’s largest faculties. Founded in 1942, the Department of Psychology is the oldest francophone psychology department in North America. Accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association, the clinical psychology section offers both a Research-Intervention PhD and a professional doctorate (PsyD).

The Department of Psychology is recruiting a professor with expertise in the study and intervention in matters of abuse, neglect, mistreatment of children and teenagers, and their traumatic consequences during the lifespan. Particular attention will be paid to applications demonstrating expertise relating to cultural minorities, visible minorities or indigenous peoples.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Teach at the undergraduate and graduate level by levering your clinical experience, knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas: consequences of traumatic events during the lifespan, including abuse, neglect, sexual assault or other forms of violence; teaching related to these issues and in brief intervention;
  • Develop innovative teaching materials and contribute to the evolution of training programs, considering issues of diversity and social justice;
  • Supervise graduate students in their research projects, fostering their critical and scientific development;
  • Develop an innovative research program allowing the integration of research projects from students in our clinical doctoral programs;
  • Actively participate in the clinical psychology section, particularly in the PsyD program and clinical training, as well as in departmental activities through your involvement in various committees;
  • Contribute to the development of collective projects promoting support for student success;
  • Develop collaborations with researchers from academic settings as well as with partners from community, institutional or judicial practice settings;
  • Advance knowledge and practices in prevention, intervention or support for survivors, communities and institutions involved;
  • Value trauma-sensitive approaches, intercultural realities, diversity and perspectives of indigenous peoples;
  • Contribute to the development of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and of the Institution through scientific and social committees and activities.

Qualifications

  • Hold a doctorate in clinical psychology or the equivalent;
  • Be a member of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ) or eligible through an equivalency process within a 12-month period at the OPQ;
  • Be at the beginning of a professoral career since the position is open at the assistant professor rank;
  • Have expertise in the study and intervention of abuse, neglect, and their traumatic consequences in children, teenagers during the lifespan;
  • Have clinical experience in evaluating these issues and intervention, particularly in terms of brief therapies, acquired after obtaining the doctorate;
  • Ability to provide high quality university teaching and research supervision;
  • Demonstrable ability through publications in peer-reviewed or professional journals, of your scientific skills and your ability to contribute to the Department’s and University’s influence and outreach;
  • Demonstrate potential to develop local, national and international collaborations;
  • Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
