Organizational Unit Overview:
The Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Education (EMSE) department is one of four departments within the College of Education. Specific to elementary education, EMSE offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, including a Bachelor of Science K-6 licensure program and a Master of Arts in Education in Elementary Education with a masters level K-6 elementary teaching license. The department also provides two certificates for candidates obtaining an elementary residency license in North Carolina: the post-baccalaureate Teacher Licensure in Elementary Education Certificate and the graduate Teacher Licensure in Elementary Education: Advanced Certificate.
Concentrations for the MAEd in Elementary Education include Academically and Intellectually Gifted, Advanced Content Pedagogy, Teacher Leadership, and Teaching Children in Poverty. Additionally, a Teaching Children in Poverty graduate certificate program, Teacher Leadership graduate certificate program, and Academically Gifted add-on license and graduate certificate are available. Faculty in the department engage in regular collaboration and leadership with the shared goal of producing quality teachers.
Job Duties:
The Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Education (EMSE) at East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking applicants for one tenure-track, nine-month, full-time, elementary education faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in elementary education. The position begins August 2026. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
Responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate and/or graduate Elementary Education courses in face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid formats; teaching undergraduate and/or graduate residency courses; supervising practicum and/or internship experiences; building connections to local schools; and collaborating within the department and across the college to strengthen course and program alignment.
Responsibilities also include engaging in scholarly research and grant-writing, presenting at professional conferences, and collaborating with colleagues to strengthen research-to-practice within the program.
The faculty member is expected to engage in appropriate professional service to the department, college, university, local schools, and to the education profession.
Contingent upon available funding.
Minimum Education/Experience:
An earned doctorate in elementary education or a related field (including but not limited to curriculum and instruction, teacher education, or educational leadership).
Three years or more of K-6 teaching experience.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with NCSCOS, edTPA, and the North Carolina teacher licensure process and requirements, or similar information from other states. Candidates published research and research-in-progress should represent a clear research agenda and/or show promise for a clear research agenda.
Candidates with a Ph.D. or Ed.D. conferred at the time of initial appointment will hold the rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates may also be initially appointed with the probationary rank of Assistant Professor but must have the terminal degree conferred prior to the first reappointment. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
Current or eligibility for North Carolina Teaching Licensure.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Experience teaching in higher education for face-to-face and online courses, teaching in a public elementary school setting, teaching in teacher education program(s), supervising pre-service teachers.
