Overview

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat Peoples, the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Mechatronics Engineering (MIME) in the Faculty of Engineering & Architectural Science invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in Mechatronics Engineering, focusing on Advanced Mechatronics/Robotics, effective July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval.

The successful candidates will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activities, and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Teach and develop curriculum at undergraduate and graduate levels; supervise students.
  • Research: Pursue a strong, externally funded, innovative research program or creative activity producing cutting-edge, high-quality results.
  • Service: Contribute to the life of the Department and the University through collegial service.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical-Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field by the appointment date.
  • Evidence of:
    • Strong background in theoretical/experimental mechatronics/robotics complementing the research of the Mechatronics Engineering group. Relevant areas may include:
      • Embedded systems, hardware-software co-design, advanced control techniques, precision mechatronics
      • Collective and interactive robotics, bio-inspired robotics, micro/nano robotics
      • Autonomous mobility, Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT), high-performance sensors and smart actuators
      • Sensor fusion and network, AI-enabled mechatronics, and biomechatronics
    • Strong emerging scholarly research or creative activity, demonstrated via publications, presentations, grants, awards, and community/professional contributions.
    • Teaching potential and excellence in Mechatronics Engineering at undergraduate and graduate levels (evidenced by a teaching dossier).
    • Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in service, teaching, and research.
    • Ability and willingness to contribute to the Department and University community.
  • Eligibility for P.Eng. License in Ontario and commitment to obtaining it.

Salary & Terms

These positions fall under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca].

Minimum salary for Assistant Professor: $103,916.30 per annum, commensurate with qualifications.

Positions recognize career interruptions and non-traditional academic paths.

Department & University

The Department has 44 faculty members, offering BEng programs in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and (from 2027) Mechatronics Engineering.

Graduate programs: PhD, MASc, and MEng.

Approximately 1,600 undergraduate students, 100 graduate students, and 15 postdoctoral fellows.

TMU offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, a professionally focused curriculum, and emphasizes teaching, research, and creative activities.
