Assistant Professor – Instrumental Music Education – Tenure-Track

Western Michigan University invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor, Instrumental Music Education for the Irving S. Gilmore School of Music, College of Fine Arts. The position will require in-person instruction on the WMU main campus in Kalamazoo. This is an academic year position at 1.0 FTE. The anticipated start date is Fall of 2026.
Major Responsibilities:
- Teach instrumental music education courses
- Supervise instrumental teaching internship assignments
- Conduct the Concert Band
- Engage in recruitment for undergraduate students
- Engage in research/creative scholarship
- Other teaching duties as assigned
- Attend departmental faculty and area meetings and engage in service to the University as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- A doctorate degree or international equivalent in Music Education or ABD by time of appointment.
- Three or more years of K-12 music teaching experience
- A record of professional research and creative scholarship.
Desired Qualifications
- Six or more years of K-12 music teaching experience, including three years or more of conducting a middle/high school band
- Experience teaching at the collegiate level as the instructor of record
- Experience with recruitment, including students from historically marginalized populations
- A vision for how music education programs should train teachers given the changing landscape of musical practices
