Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor (or Associate Professor with appropriate qualifications) in the Department of Religion to begin August 15, 2026. The successful candidate will be appointed as the ke and Kristina Bonnier Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies, which includes an annual stipend and professional development funds.

Employment Type: Full-Time (1.0 FTE), Benefits-Eligible; Exempt (Salaried)

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Jewish Studies (or cognate field with an emphasis on Judaism); candidates with ABD status will be considered if the degree is completed by September 30, 2026.
  • Commitment to fulfilling the purpose of the Bonnier Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies, including advancing the study of Jewish history, culture, religion, and thought, and performing administrative duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching.
  • Evidence of commitment to undergraduate student advising.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Clear research and publication trajectory.
  • Prior experience with skills needed for the Bonnier Endowed Chair duties, such as collaborating with campus offices, planning events, cultivating relationships, and facilitating interreligious engagement.
  • Evidence of preparation for primary teaching responsibilities.
  • Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary programs like Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies; Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies; or Comparative Literature.

Major/Essential Functions:

Gustavus faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The annual course load is six courses, with a two-course release for administrative responsibilities. Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Judaism, World Religions, additional courses in the individual's area of expertise, and contributions to general education.

Administrative duties include collaborating with campus offices to support Jewish students' religious life, serving on committees, facilitating interreligious engagement, and cultivating relationships with regional Jewish congregations and agencies.

Help cultivate a welcoming community, improve teaching through various development opportunities, advance scholarship via research collaborations and grants, and develop professional skills through faculty participation.

Salary and Benefits:
