Job Description

Manhattanville University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Literature in the School of Arts and Sciences. While the field of study is open, candidates with an interdisciplinary focus are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach a 24-credit load per academic year, including courses in General Education, the Creative Writing and Literature major, the English concentration within the Elementary Education program, and our Interdisciplinary Studies programs. We seek a dynamic educator committed to quality teaching and advisement of undergraduate students. In addition, candidates must exhibit an eagerness to help grow the program through prospective and current student recruitment, community engagement, and experiential learning opportunities.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Teach a 24-credit course load across introductory and advanced literature courses (e.g., Introduction to Literary Studies: Ways of Reading; Literature Now: Reading and Writing the Present), first-year seminar, honors seminars, and our interdisciplinary Storytelling in the 21st Century course.
  • Develop and deliver engaging, accessible courses that reflect a broad understanding of literary traditions, genres, and critical approaches.
  • Contribute to the General Education curriculum and Interdisciplinary Studies initiatives.
  • Develop and revise curriculum to reflect current pedagogical practices and literary scholarship.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students in academic and career planning.
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda in literature or related fields.
  • Engage in professional development.
  • Participate in departmental, school, and university service, including committee work and program development.
  • Support experiential learning opportunities across the curriculum.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Commitment to inclusive and student-centered pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach across multiple programs including General Education, Creative Writing and Literature, English for Elementary Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Qualifications

Education

  • Ph.D. in Literature, English, or a closely related field. Degree at time of application or official notification of the completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2026.

Experience

  • Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level.
  • Record of scholarly publication or creative work.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary teaching and curriculum development.
  • Background in experiential learning and community-engaged pedagogy.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Salary

The annual salary for this position is $60,000.

Hours Expectation

Full-time, 35 hours per week
