Assistant Professor of Anthropology - Biological

Position Overview

Position Summary: Eastern New Mexico University's (ENMU) Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology with a specialization in Biological Anthropology. The position entails a 4/4 teaching load. This is a residential appointment in a collegial department with a supportive campus culture, and campus presence/relocation is required. ENMU seeks candidates committed to excellent undergraduate and graduate education and student success within the framework of the teacher-scholar model.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a range of introductory undergraduate-level forensic science/forensic anthropology/biological anthropology and/or other anthropology courses across in-person, hybrid, and online modalities
  • Contribute to the graduate program as a Biological Anthropologist
  • Establish a research program that provides practical, applied, and lab-based training and research experiences for ENMU students (including undergraduate capstone/graduate thesis/projects).
  • Contribute to academic planning, curricular design, program development, recruiting/retention efforts, and program assessment
  • Involvement with related student organizations
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including publications, presentations, and seeking grant funding
  • Serve on departmental, college and university committees
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology with a focus in Biological Anthropology or a closely related field
  • Commitment to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate teaching

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Clear plans for an active research program
  • Knowledge about the analysis of human remains

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in Osteology/Skeletal analysis at the college level
  • Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate anthropology students.
  • Familiarity with Native American groups and NAGPRA
  • Interest in regional issues and community engagement

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Position open until filled. Desired start date is January 2026, but Fall 2026 start is possible.
