The Department of Biology seeks applicants for a tenure-track position, beginning August 2026, with expertise in animal/human physiology, including teaching in both laboratory and classroom contexts. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biology or a related field by the time of appointment.
Whitman's biology faculty are engaged teachers and active scholars. As a department, we are excited about our new, collaboratively designed introductory series aimed at engaging and supporting our diverse and enthusiastic pool of prospective life science majors. We value and support student and faculty research, ranging from course-based research projects to ambitious externally-funded programs and research collaborations with other institutions. Candidates whose teaching or research interests will broaden departmental offerings, including in newly emerging and interdisciplinary subfields of biology, are especially welcome to apply.
The successful candidate will teach a 5-course annual load including Human Anatomy & Physiology with lab, thesis mentoring, and a contribution to the introductory biology series. Rotating course offerings will include Physiology with lab, electives in the candidate's area of specialty, and courses that contribute to the College's general education requirements. In addition, the successful candidate will build an active research program that includes Whitman student researchers.
The College provides a generous pre-tenure sabbatical program and professional development support for both research and teaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential to sustain an active research program that includes undergraduate researchers, and to participate in faculty governance, mentorship, or other forms of service in ways that fit their interests and talents.
Whitman College is committed to fostering an inclusive learning community that values diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives. In the cover letter, candidates should describe their interest in teaching undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction.
