Type: Full-Time

POSITION: Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Stetson University seeks applicants for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry. This is a full-time, nine-month position, beginning in August 2026.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in an area of chemistry broadly defined as analytical chemistry (analytical sub-disciplines such as forensics, bioanalysis, environmental analysis, and clinical analysis are also acceptable). A record of scholarly publication in an appropriate area of expertise is expected. Post-doctoral research experience and teaching experience beyond typical teaching assistant duties in graduate school are preferred but not required. Candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The annual teaching load includes five regular courses and one student-centered immersive experience (equivalent to one course) as a part of the University's experiential, contemporary, and integrative learning initiative - Hatter Ready. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and supports students interested in careers in the health sciences, attending graduate school, or entering the workforce after graduation. In addition to teaching established chemistry courses and labs, the successful candidate will be willing to develop new courses suitable for general education designation, including courses that may become part of the University's First Year Seminar or Junior Seminar program. As teacher-scholars, candidates will be expected to be excellent teachers and pursue a vibrant research program. The candidate will also provide academic advising for undergraduates each semester. University service and/or leadership are also expected commensurate with rank.

For more information on our expectations in teaching and scholarship, our tenure policies, and our support for faculty development, please see the Academic Affairs website.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Stetson is accredited by the ACS and currently consists of seven full-time faculty members with areas of expertise in analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. The department has a long history of successfully placing students in reputable graduate programs, as well as directly into the workforce. Faculty in the department are committed to the teacher-scholar model, which involves teaching within a liberal arts environment where the primary focus is extensive interaction with undergraduate students in a small class setting, while also maintaining an active scholarly agenda. Our faculty work alongside other natural science colleagues in the departments of biology, health sciences, environmental science and studies, and physics, sharing a 22,000 square-foot Sage Science Facility and the 44,000 square-foot Brown Hall Center for Health and Innovation. Please see the department website for more information.

SALARY:

Salary is competitive.

STARTING DATE:

August 11, 2026

APPLICATION:

Applicants should supply:
1) a cover letter that includes the candidate's philosophy of teaching, advising, and mentoring of undergraduate research in a liberal arts university,
2) a research plan specifically tailored to working with undergraduates,
3) a curriculum vitae,
4) a copy of graduate transcripts, and
5) three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must include an evaluation of teaching ability (all letters should be submitted to the search committee directly by the recommender).
