Position Overview

Position Summary:
The Department of Physical Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry, starting August 2026. ENMU seeks candidates with a preferred expertise in the broad fields of Forensic Chemistry and/or Environmental Chemistry and a desire to engage in interdisciplinary research in Forensic Chemistry, Green Chemistry, or Sustainability. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence and the ability to establish a collaborative research program that engages students in applied and/or basic research and that augments the ongoing research. The Department offers bachelor's degrees in aviation science, biochemistry and chemistry, environmental science, and a master's degree in chemistry. The Department has up-to-date classroom and research space in the Science Building and the recently renovated ($23 million) Roosevelt Science Center, as well as major instrumentation to support teaching and research (e.g., NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, GC-MS, XRF, XRD, and new spectrometers including fluorescence, IR, and UV-vis). This position is a residential appointment and campus presence is required. Review of applications will begin mid-February and continue until the position is filled.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach the lectures and laboratories of Forensic Chemistry at the undergraduate level and Chemistry courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Establish an active research program which provides training and research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Seek and obtain extramural funding to support research efforts.
  • Support undergraduate and graduate research through directing and mentoring student research projects, including participation in and chairing of thesis committees.
  • Maintain appropriate service to the department, college, and university, including service on departmental, college, and university committees, assisting with department recruitment and retention efforts, maintaining major instruments, and advising students.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field. ABDs will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and a willingness to teach using traditional, hybrid, or online distance learning technologies.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to collaboration and working as part of a team to visualize, plan, deliver, assess, and redirect programs as needed.
  • Clear plans for an active research program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in Forensic Chemistry and/or Environmental Chemistry.
  • University-level teaching experience.
  • Experience in online teaching.
  • Experience in GC-/LC-MS and training users for GC-/LC-MS.
  • Demonstrated experience with grant writing and funding.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is sedentary in nature with 25 pounds of maximum weight to lift and carry.
  • Work during normal work hours and may include weekend and evening hours.
  • Work requires reaching, handling of objects with hands and/or fingers, talking, and/or hearing, and seeing.
  • Work may involve exposure to health hazards through the use of chemicals and instruments in the teaching and research laboratories.
