Position:

The Department of Psychology at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in the area of Developmental Psychology or a closely related field, at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses and graduate courses in our Psychological Science MA Program. Course topics may include existing courses in the developmental cluster (i.e., developmental psychology, infancy and early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, gerontology) as well as the opportunity to develop new courses (e.g., emerging adulthood, cognitive and/or socioemotional development, or advanced senior electives in the faculty member's area). In addition, all faculty members are expected to conduct research in the subdiscipline of their expertise and involve undergraduate and/or graduate students in their research. Developmental Psychology faculty have the opportunity to mentor students in the psychology department graduate programs.

Applicants are expected to understand and serve the needs of a diverse student body and must clearly demonstrate their contributions to equity, diversity, and justice through teaching, mentoring, research, and/or service that fosters an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online and will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Developmental Psychology or a closely related field from an accredited institution. The degree must be awarded before the date of appointment.
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in developmental psychology, promoting equitable learning outcomes.
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, excellence in research in developmental psychology or a closely related area that involves undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, effectively supporting the learning needs of a diverse student population, including a demonstrated commitment to enhancing the educational environment for students from diverse and marginalized backgrounds.
  • Commitment to, and clear potential for, inclusively mentoring diverse and underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise that complements the existing strengths within the department.
  • A strong record of research contributions within the candidate's area of specialization that incorporates contemporary approaches to developmental psychology.
  • A clear potential research program that can be successfully accomplished within the context of the university's mission, values, and resources.
  • Experience in, or demonstrated potential for:
    • Creating a student-centered and active learning environment.
    • Using culturally-responsive teaching approaches that promote students' understanding of developmental psychology across diverse populations and contexts.
    • Engaging in professional development opportunities and/or service activities, particularly those that build effectiveness in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
