The Department of Visual Arts at Coastal Carolina University, accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design), is seeking applications for a full-time position at the level of Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, with a focus on AI and technological integration, to begin August 2026.
The successful applicant will teach a wide range of undergraduate graphic design courses extending from first year through senior thesis in our BA (Graphic Design) and BFA (Visual Communication Design) sequences. Candidates who can address the role of technology, such as AI, in the design field will be given special consideration. Typical teaching course load may include content in typography, design history, identity systems, environmental, and motion design. Understanding and expression of graphic design should extend beyond technique and application to also include historical context, theory, concept, and process.
Candidates should hold an MFA /terminal degree in graphic design/visual communication by the date of hiring, and have undergraduate teaching experience in the area of design beyond the graduate level. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of research and professional activity in the field of design. We seek teacher-scholars who have a demonstrated commitment to underrepresented and underserved communities as well as the academic success of all our students, as such candidates are expected to collaborate with the department towards building a strong and diverse curriculum. Salary is nationally competitive.
The Department of Visual Arts offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History, Art Studio, and Graphic Design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Art and Visual Communication Design as well as a number of minors. The department values collaboration at all levels and encourages faculty’s active engagement with students and the community through close-knit classroom experiences and through experiential learning activities that highlight faculty’s diverse expertise and research.

Job Duties
- Teaches students in the classroom, laboratory, and/or studio.
- Prepares content, syllabi, and University Moodle/curricular site for each course and/or lab assigned each semester. Communicates to students after reviewing assignments. Calculates and assigns grades (e.g., mid-term and final) through established procedures listed in the Faculty Manual and University catalog. Tracks and reports absences as directed by the Office of the Registrar.
- Conducts research to create and add to knowledge in a field or produces creative work. Trains students in related research techniques and in creative production.
- Posts and holds regular office hours each week per College and University guidelines. Engages in University-related activities including committee assignments, meetings, ceremonies, events and scholarly pursuits as prescribed in the Faculty Manual.
- Performs other departmental needs as assigned.
