Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Architecture, Art, and Design at Fairmont State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. We seek a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator who is committed to fostering creativity, critical thinking, and professional readiness in an applied learning environment.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to inspire experimentation, cultivate conceptual and technical rigor, and prepare students for careers in graphic design and related creative industries. Candidates should be prepared to teach across all levels of the curriculum while contributing to interdisciplinary collaboration within the department's architecture, art, and design programs. Potential courses may include Graphic Design I and II, Typography, Branding and Identity Systems, Page Layout, Illustration, Photography I and II, Video Production, Digital Media, UX/UI Design, Motion Graphics, and Portfolio Development. The successful candidate will also contribute to foundations coursework and participate in programmatic reviews.
Faculty members in the department are expected to maintain active professional or scholarly engagement in graphic design, including web and interactive design, and to contribute meaningfully to departmental, college, and university service. This includes advising a cohort of undergraduate students, mentoring and supporting their academic and professional development, participating in curriculum development, and serving on departmental and college committees. Regular attendance and engagement in departmental, divisional, and college meetings are required, as is maintaining disciplinary expertise and integrating emerging design technologies into instruction. Other duties may be assigned in support of the department's mission.
The department values a broad and inclusive understanding of scholarship, aligned with Boyer's Model of Scholarship, recognizing the scholarship of discovery, integration, application, and teaching as integral to faculty success in the tenure and promotion process. The position start date is August 2026.
Perform other appropriate duties as may be assigned. Adhere to and comply with all relevant federal state and local laws; if assigned a State purchasing card abide by all purchasing rules and provisions and reports/balances account as required or directed; adhere to all institutional policies and guidelines including the provisions of the employee's relevant employee handbook; adhere to and comply with relevant provisions of the WV State Ethics Act; adhere to all safety rules and provisions; report any personal accidents/injuries or accidents/injuries of assigned staff to HR by end of work day or work shift; and complete all required performance evaluations timely completely and accurately.
Minimum Required Education
Applicants must have a Master's, or MFA. in Graphic Design or a closely related field completed by the start of employment, with significant professional experience in graphic design, including photo/video and interactive design. Candidates should possess a professional portfolio demonstrating proficiency and creativity in areas relevant to the courses they will teach. Knowledge of contemporary educational methods and effective oral and written communication skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications
- Preferred candidates will have two or more years of college-level teaching experience, experience mentoring students, and a record of participation in interdisciplinary or community-engaged projects. Familiarity with integrating emerging technologies into curriculum is also desired.
