Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies
The Louisiana State University School of Music invites applications for a tenure-track position, Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies, with appointment to begin in Fall 2026. We seek artist-performers and teachers with demonstrated ability to attract students who value learning in an engaged, personalized, collaborative, and inspiring School culture.
Job Responsibilities:
- Teach applied jazz at all levels and in all degree programs; depending on qualifications, teach relevant jazz courses in history, theory, arranging/composition, and pedagogy; lead ensembles (chamber jazz and big band); advise graduate students; recruit and retain excellent student musicians; perform with the LSU jazz faculty
- Build and maintain a national and international profile as performer and teacher
- Provide service and participate in faculty governance
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education Level: DMA
- Specific Degree: A doctorate in jazz performance
- Degree Substitute: A doctorate in related area or equivalent professional experience
- Specific Experience: Distinguished record as a performer; demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching a broad range of students; and capacity to contribute scholarship at a level appropriate for a major School of Music at a Research I, flagship university
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education Level: DMA
- Specific Degree: A doctorate in jazz performance
- Specific Experience: Jazz bass as the principal performance area, although other specialties will be considered when coupled with strong background in jazz teaching, evidence of strong interpersonal and professional skills that foster relationship-building, creative problem-solving, and innovative opportunities
