Job Details

The Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures (ILAC) at Stanford University invites applications for a tenure-line Assistant Professor in Latin American literature and cultures, including Brazil. We welcome applicants working in any period, genre, or critical approach, including but not limited to literary studies, cultural studies, film and media, and visual culture. In addition to English, native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is required. Native or near-native proficiency in both languages is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, advise doctoral students, and participate in the broader intellectual life of the department and the university. ILAC is a diverse and internationally oriented department; it is housed within the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages and maintains strong ties to interdisciplinary programs across the humanities.

Candidates are expected to have the Ph.D. in hand by the appointment start date (September 1, 2027). We seek candidates with a demonstrated record of or clear promise in research, strong teaching experience, and a commitment to graduate mentorship.

The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2027.

Candidates should apply through Stanford Faculty Positions and submit:

  • a cover letter
  • curriculum vitae (including a complete publication list)
  • a combined research and teaching statement (no more than three single-spaced pages)
  • two writing samples (8,000-10,000 words each), one in English, one in Spanish or Portuguese
  • sample syllabus for an undergraduate survey course in literature
  • three letters of recommendation

The Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures, School of Humanities & Sciences, and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an open and respectful academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these values.

The salary range for this position is $115,133 – $135,388 for the academic year 2026-2027.

Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
