Job Description:
The Legal Rhetoric Program in the Washington College of Law at American University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Legal Rhetoric, without reappointment, beginning August 1, 2026 and ending July 31, 2027 to teach two sections of Legal Research & Writing I (Fall) and two sections of Legal Research & Writing II (Spring) (“LRW”).
LRW courses are delivered to first-year students over the Fall and Spring semesters in class sizes of approximately 22 students. The course meets once weekly for 110 minutes. These courses introduce students to principles of legal research, writing, analysis, and citation, as well as written and oral advocacy. Utilizing smaller class sizes, students are immersed in a highly interactive learning environment that includes simulated client interviews, mock oral arguments, and facilitated group work.
LRW courses at the Washington College of Law are taught by a combination of full-time faculty and adjunct faculty. Full-time faculty work collaboratively to develop a shared syllabus, assignment, and assessment rubrics. Candidates should have experience teaching LRW courses, strong course evaluations, and strong collaboration skills. Candidates will also supervise and mentor classroom teaching assistants.
Candidates must hold a J.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree by the date of their application. Salary and benefits are competitive. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled, subject to on-going budgetary approval. Include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and recent teaching evaluations. Please contact Erica Devine, Faculty Affairs Manager, at edevine@american.edu if you have any questions.
Salary range: $80,000-$95,000 (disclosure pursuant to D.C. law).
