Job Description

The Department of Mathematics at Southern Utah University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Mathematics position starting August 2026. This is a full-time, tenure-track position. The responsibilities of this position are three-fold: effective teaching, original scholarship, and dedicated service. The hired candidate’s teaching schedule will be coordinated between them and the Department Chair, consisting mostly of 3- and 4-credit classes, for a total of 24 credit hours each academic year (typically 12 per semester). These courses will range across all levels, from general education to upper-division. Candidates with a specialty and interest in teaching or developing courses in data science, statistics, or applied mathematics will be highly favored. Scholarly activities should include publications and presentations within the scope of the Mathematics Department’s criteria. The potential to engage undergraduate students in research is also viewed favorably. While all mathematical backgrounds are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to applicants whose backgrounds are in data science, statistics, or applied mathematics. Committee work and professional development are also expected. The Mathematics Department is eager to hire a candidate who can complement and help grow our brand-new, accredited data science program and develop a new BS in statistics that builds upon our new minor in statistics.

Review of applications will begin immediately, with priority given to candidates who apply before January 15, 2026. The position will remain open until filled.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience. The position includes benefits that may include relocation expenses for hired candidates. About the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Southern Utah University employs over 20 full-time, collegial faculty members who work well together and are excellent teachers, and are active in scholarship and professional development. The department has about 70 majors studying pure and applied mathematics, mathematics education, actuarial science, and, as of Fall 2024, a brand-new data science major. Our data science program has already been approved to receive accreditation by ABET. Presently, there are only 6 US universities accredited in data science by ABET, and SUU will be the first such university in the Intermountain West. The department also offers minors in mathematics, mathematics education, and actuarial science, as well as a certificate in data science. Starting in Fall 2026, it will offer a new minor in statistics. In the next 3-5 years, the SUU Math department will begin offering a major in statistics, and the successful candidate to this position will be instrumental in that goal.

Our math students have 100% placement in major-related jobs and graduate school. Our students frequently test overall in the top 25% of undergraduates nationwide, are active in undergraduate research, are often employed as tutors and teaching assistants, and form a vibrant community in activities such as the Math Club. The Math Department is housed within the Walter Maxwell Gibson College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with five other departments: Biology, Chemistry & Physics, Computer Science & Cybersecurity, Engineering & Technology, and Geosciences. The department also fulfills a service role in teaching several general education courses, courses for other STEM majors, and developmental mathematics courses that prepare SUU students for college-level mathematics.
