The Department of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga invites applicants for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Music Education (General Music Specialist), beginning August 1, 2026.
The UTC Department of Music is a vibrant community of performers, scholars, and educators committed to excellence in teaching, research, creative work, and service. It offers undergraduate degrees in Music Education, Music Therapy, Performance, and Composition, as well as the M.M. in Music Education. The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic faculty committed to fostering musical excellence, advancing innovative pedagogy, and contributing to the cultural vitality of the region and beyond.
Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Music Education, including General Music Methods, Technology for Music Educators, Research Methods in Music Education, and/or Studies in Music Curricula.
Additional teaching/advising responsibilities may include:
- Serving as Director of the Kodály Institute at UTC
- Teaching courses in foundation studies (e.g., Aural Skills, Music Theory, Music History and Literature), in accordance with the candidate’s expertise and Department needs
- Supervising student teachers
- Directing graduate research projects
- Advising music education majors
The candidate is expected to build meaningful relationships with the local K-12 education community, offering clinics and workshops to area in-service teachers and facilitating field experiences for preservice teachers.
Faculty in the Department of Music are expected to serve on department, college, and campus committees; pursue an active and ongoing agenda of scholarly or creative activity in their field; maintain memberships in regional and national professional organizations; and contribute to the Department’s recruitment and retention efforts, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Music or Music Education (PhD, DMA). ABD candidates will be considered, with completion expected by August 1, 2026.
- Three years of successful teaching experience in K-12 school settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to mentoring future music educators and fostering collaboration across the music education community.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five or more years of successful teaching experience in K-12 school settings, with evidence of broad and innovative approaches to curriculum and instruction. Elementary experience preferred.
- Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate music education courses.
- Experience in curriculum development and program assessment.
- Knowledge of and expertise in a wide variety of technology used in music education settings.
- Certification in Kodály (preferred), Orff, and/or Dalcroze approaches.
- Evidence of research activity with the potential for regional, national, or international impact.
