The University of Arizona's Fred Fox School of Music seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Assistant Professor of Music/Music Education for our Tucson area campus. This faculty teaching and research position focuses on Youth Music Education, the preparation of future teachers in music, and the area of accessible music opportunities in youth education using the knowledge of Elementary General Music Teaching Methods & Approaches (Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze and Suzuki); Curriculum Development; Qualitative Research (Design, Implementation, and Publication) & Grant Writing; and Musicianship (Theory & Performance). Duties & Responsibilities
- Commitment to offering a customizable curriculum with comprehensive musical offerings and connecting students to important real-world experiences.
- Teaching music education courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in elementary/youth methods and materials, qualitative research, and preparation of student teachers, particularly those focused on youth/elementary music education.
- Demonstrating comprehensive education practices in the music education program through teaching, mentoring, and related activities.
- Maintaining a record of scholarly activity including publications, presentations, and leadership in the country's music educational system.
- Supervising graduate and undergraduate research, including graduate theses and dissertations.
- Serving on graduate student committees and school's standing committees of operation, and organizing outreach activities in local schools and the community.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of candidate's research field, focused on Youth Music Education, and its situation relative to the needs of students, school systems, and the community.
- Knowledge of and ability to teach Elementary General Music Methods and Approaches (including Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze and Suzuki).
- Knowledge of Qualitative Research (Design, Implementation, and Publication) and Grant Writing.
- Knowledge of Musicianship Development (Theory and Performance).
- Ability to organize curriculum in the subject area at all levels.
- Knowledge of and ability to develop online curriculum.
- Knowledge of contemporary digital teaching tools and engagement techniques.
- Ability to teach at all levels.
- Command of appropriate pedagogical skills in support of efficacious teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in Music Education or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.
- Experience in teaching courses in the field of Music Education, specifically in Youth Music Education and the preparation of student teachers in music.
Preferred Qualifications
- Record of publications and scholarly presentations.
- Demonstrated teaching experience of both undergraduate and graduate students at the university level.
- Experience in developing innovative approaches to curriculum, pedagogy and research.
- Experience in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and scholarship.
- Experience in successful grant writing.
