Job Summary:
Marist University (Poughkeepsie, NY) seeks an Assistant Professor of Philosophy, who will teach Marist students in the School of Liberal Arts. This Assistant Professor position will teach approximately 21 credit hours during the academic year. They will also develop course outlines, assign lessons, grade homework and classroom papers, prepare and administer tests to evaluate students' progress, and issue reports to inform students and college administration about the quality of educational achievement.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field.

Essential Functions:
The Assistant Professor will develop course outlines, assign lessons, grade homework and classroom papers, prepare and administer tests to evaluate students' progress, and issue reports to inform students and college administration about the quality of educational achievement.
Specifically, the Assistant Professor may teach the following courses, among others:

PHIL 101 - Philosophical Perspectives: This course will introduce students to the nature and scope of philosophical inquiry. Students will examine some of the basic philosophical questions concerning knowledge (epistemology), reality (metaphysics), and human values (ethics, political philosophy, aesthetics) that underlie all other disciplines in the college curriculum. During their examination of these questions, students will gain an appreciation of some of the broad theoretical perspectives from which they can view other disciplines. They will also develop skills that are common to all disciplines: critical thinking and logical reasoning skills, as well as skills in clear speaking and writing. This course is taken by all Marist students and constitutes part of the first-year common academic experience.

PHIL 103 - World Views and Values: This course will help students to ask basic questions about the ultimate meaning of life, to take a comprehensive and holistic world view, and to articulate a coherent values system. The basic methodology for teaching the course is comparative and socio-analytic. Offered every semester.

  • Tuition Benefits:
    + Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
    + University pays 100% tuition only.
    + Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

*Eligibility requirements including waiting periods and/or employee probationary periods may apply at the discretion of the University.

About the Department/School:
The School of Liberal Arts includes 50 full-time faculty and over 75 part-time faculty. The School of Liberal Arts includes departments in english, history, modern languages, philosophy & religious studies, and political science, and many interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies, African Diaspora Studies, Cognitive Science, Global Studies, and Latin American & Caribbean Studies. In addition, the ABA approved Paralegal Studies Program and the Pre-Law Program are part of the School of Liberal Arts. The School of Liberal Arts also houses the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership, the Hudson River Valley Institute, the Weiss Language Center, the Writing Center, and the Marist Theatre Program.
