Assistant Professor of Psychology
The Department of Psychology at Wofford College, a small liberal arts college in Spartanburg, South Carolina, invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of Clinical and/or Developmental Psychology to begin fall 2026.
At Wofford College, the Psychology Department is part of the Natural Sciences division, and all Psychology majors earn a Bachelor of Science degree. All coursework has an empirical focus, and we strive to incorporate research within and outside of the classroom, including a required semester-long senior thesis course. Our major attracts high-quality students, having maintained a high percentile rank (top 15%) on the Major Field Test in Psychology compared to other institutions over the last 15 years. At Wofford and within the Psychology Department, we place a high value on faculty-student relationships, as evident in our student-led club, the Psychology Society, and a new peer-to-peer student mentorship program, PsychMentor. Faculty enjoy a supportive and engaged work environment.
EXPECTATIONS
At Wofford, faculty are teacher-scholars with a high aptitude for and interest in undergraduate teaching and advising, community outreach, and a commitment to the liberal arts. Faculty teach a 3-1-3 load when they are teaching 3-credit courses, or a 2-1-2 load for 4-credit (lab) courses. The “1” in the teaching load indicates the January “Interim course” term in which professors teach on a variety of topics using experiential teaching methods or may study abroad with students.
The successful candidate will teach a combination of required general education/core courses and upper-level courses in the psychology major. Within the core curriculum, the new faculty member is expected to teach Introduction to Psychological Science, a general education course that includes a laboratory component, and either Quantitative Methods 1 (Statistics) or Quantitative Methods 2 (Research Methods), all in a rotation with the other psychology faculty. The new faculty member will contribute to teaching at the survey level (for example, Psychopathology, Child & Adolescent / Lifespan Development, Personality), as well as upper-division electives in the candidate’s area of expertise (for example, Child Psychopathology, Clinical Psychology, Psychological Assessment, or new courses proposed by the candidate). All psychology faculty teach a yearly section of the senior research thesis with a team of students working within the professor’s research area. Teaching the senior thesis course allows some faculty research to be conducted as part of the teaching load. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to develop an active research program that engages undergraduate students in high-quality research. Preference will be given to candidates conducting human research within clinical or developmental areas.
Wofford College provides the opportunity for a sabbatical (one semester plus the Interim term) after every six years of service. To earn tenure after six years, faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development, and service to the college.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology from an APA-accredited institution is required. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience at the collegiate level and those with experience conducting human research using quantitative methods within clinical and/or developmental areas.
