The Fine Arts Department of Hampden-Sydney College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track professor in Studio Art. The appointment is at the Assistant Professor level and will begin August of 2026. Applicants must have an MFA by the date of appointment. Teaching experience beyond the level of teaching assistant is desired.
We seek outstanding teachers with expertise in darkroom and digital photography, to join a small studio arts program within a vibrant liberal-arts community. Preference will be given to candidates with additional experience in video and/or two-dimensional design (with digital components). Well-qualified candidates will demonstrate innovative teaching methods; a strong exhibition record; a knowledge of contemporary art and its history; and an ability to integrate traditional studio craft with newer technologies. Candidates must be committed to undergraduate liberal-arts education and express a strong desire to contribute to an evolving arts program. We seek a colleague who can foster interdisciplinary connections both within the Fine Arts Department and across the College as a whole.
The successful candidate will have the skills necessary to effectively mentor students and to encourage growth in both their creative thinking and their craft. Additionally, candidates must possess organizational skills: ability to manage the darkroom, digital lab, and design studio; and effectiveness in sharing the responsibilities of a small department.
The successful candidate will teach beginner through advanced courses in lens-based art, as well as design, and work with other Visual Arts faculty to supervise senior thesis projects. They will be encouraged to develop courses in their area(s) of interest. Teaching load is 3 courses per semester plus one additional course every three years.
