JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Professor of Pastry will hold a faculty appointment and have academic and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the Community College of Rhode Island. The newly developed Culinary Craftsmanship program is a two-year associate degree program with a one-year stackable certificate in Culinary Essentials. The Assistant Professor will be responsible for assisting with the overall operation and educational quality of the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Focus:

  • Demonstrate commitment to providing academic support to all students
  • Ensure student awareness of available resources that support learning and success within the institution
  • Facilitate engagement and academic success by incorporating student advising, counseling, and remediation as needed
  • Ensure orientation to the program’s requirements of the personnel who supervise or instruct students at clinical sites
  • Provide administration, organization, and supervision of student experience

Instructional Skills:

  • Facilitate learning in the classroom
  • Contribute to a dynamic teaching/learning environment requiring adaptability, creativity, and teamwork
  • Use innovative instructional strategies that support student success and recognize diverse learning styles
  • Use technology to enhance instruction and communicate effectively with the campus community
  • Apply strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and a collaborative approach to working with students and colleagues
  • Participate in interprofessional educational activities
  • Convey knowledge and skills effectively to students
  • Continue professional development as an educator
  • Teach appropriate courses within the program maintaining food safety and quality standards

Departmental Support:

  • Assist in developing scheduling for the program including staffing of adjuncts as needed
  • Participate in departmental and college-wide activities
  • Demonstrate commitment to collaboration and collegiality
  • Participate in the hiring process of additional faculty for the department
  • Assure adherence to food safety and sanitation standards
  • Manage and perform ordering for all necessary supplies for classrooms within department
  • Assist in managing budgeting and other fiscal responsibilities
  • Develop and implement curriculum to maintain industry and academic standards and expectations
  • Other duties as required

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Minimum of 3 years industry and/or Pastry Arts teaching experience
  • Food Safety Manager Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in related field
  • Related industry certification
  • Supervisory experience
  • Teaching experience in culinary or pastry
  • Bilingual
